Aes Sídhe (Ah she)

General Information

The aes sídhe are the descending race from the tuath dé. They are the oldest unchanged race with a history that goes back almost to the creation of the skyarch. While an aes sídhe is weaker than the tuath dé that they hail from, they are the strongest race alive in Hárronfall today and were such for the most of their history.

Aes sídhe a lifespan that lasts for a few thousand years. They have massive seas of aura at their disposal that make the pools of aura the ljósálfar possessed appear as small puddles. They have a complete number of seven aura gates and their command over their aura is more flexible than the álfar. The aes sídhe are sexless with exogenous features. They have light brown skin and eyes and pointed ears. Their hair is dark brown and curly.

While the aes sídhe are powerful, they are few in number. Only a few hundred of them are alive at one time. They recognize the strength that comes in numbers, which is something that the other races will always have an edge over them. In order to guard their numbers, it is rare for an aes sídhe to leave the protection of their homeland in Bhur-loka’s Gate.

Culture

Shared customary codes and values

Aes sídhe kind consist of a small tribe. The extension of their history is mind numbing. Even the elders of the other races are suckling babes in their eyes. Their ways are alien to the other beings and only one of their own kind can truly understand them and relate to their timelessness. Aes sídhe all share close bonds with one another. They know the names, habits and preferences of their fellow aes sídhe as well as they know their own. As such, each aes sídhe life is held sacred. They don’t kill one of their own regardless of the circumstances and when one of the aes sídhe passes, they mourn the death as a mother mourning the loss of their child.

Art & Architecture

With how long an aes sídhe’s life is, they have a lot of time to muck about aimlessly. They develop a vast amount of skills and talents in their lifetime and have all the time in the world to experiment with invention, even if their creations have no inherent value. They love to challenge each other into impossible tasks, like making a machine forever in motion, a lamp that will light without the use of aura, finding a way for water to flow uphill. When they accomplish these impossible feats, they make an art of their creations and put them on display for all to see. Their home city is almost crowded with random tinkered together creations.

Every once in a while their creations have more practical uses. Many inventions that have made the lives of the other races easier have can trace their lines back to challenge between to aes sídhe. They found ways to keep food cold even in the heat of summer, ways to communicate through great distances by the use of crystal mirrors, a way to cheaply manufacture paper using wood pulp, to name a few of their great inventions.

Ideals

Beauty Ideals

The aes sídhe are a proud race. They are the oldest and most powerful race in Hárronfall and won’t let anyone forget it. The vanity of their race walks hand in hand with their pride. They adorn their bodies with extravagant jewels and brilliant paints. Aes sídhe wear minimal garments so others can bask in the beauty of their flesh. The few pieces of clothing that they do wear are brightly colored, tasseled, and embroidered with detailed designs.

Major organizations

Every aes sídhe by birth rite is part of the Seelie Court. This Court governs all official business of their lands and the other races that live alongside them in Bhur-loka’s Gate. The Seelie Court stays in the capital while other smaller courts govern cities and towns. These smaller courts are mostly allowed to govern their city the way they please as long as they keep to aes sídhe laws. If an issue is too large for a minor court to deal with, they report the problem back to the Seelie Court.

Each aes sídhe has a different role to play on the court. Some choose punishment for lawbreakers, others oversee that laws are maintained, others keep records and histories. When any decision is made by the court, every aes sídhe cast their vote where majority rules. Many of the aes sídhe play a minor role in the Seelie Court if they don’t wish to be too involved in the inner workings of the government. These aes sídhe’s only role in the court is voting.

Aes Sídhe Reproduction

Aes sídhe have a unique way of reproducing as sexless beings. Every aes sídhe has organs to fertilize and produce egg cells. They are born with enough egg cells to reproduce once in this manner, but can play the other role in reproduction as many times as needed.

An aes sídhe’s body becomes ready to conceive after they reach a thousand years old and this can happen at any point in their lifetime after they reach that milestone. This change hits randomly and can’t be predicted. When this change happens, their body prepares itself for mating through a slow, agonizing process.
Over the next span of days, an aes sídhe gains an unquenchable sex drive as their body primes for the release of their egg cells. When the time is finally at hand, all the aes sídhe gather to mate with the one ready to conceive. With an aes sídhe’s unique sexual organs, they can mate with eight others of their kind at once. Their egg cells are fertilized with the seed of every other aes sídhe.
When the mating comes to a close, the receiving aes sídhe produces a cocoon of sorts that contains two to four infants developing within. The other aes sídhe take care of and nurtures the cocoon while the receiving aes sídhe recovers from the long, drawn-out process. Aes sídhe infants develop within their cocoon for six years and emerge with the physical development of human toddlers.

Aes Sídhe From Celtic Lore

Aes sídhe means “little people.” As Christians settled Ireland in order to belittle the Celts’ great gods, they called the Tuath Dé the Aes Sídhe, turning them small. As history passed, the Christian leaders continued to suppress Celt’s worship, and the stories changed. The Aes Sídhe were more commonly seen as “The Good Neighbors” or “The Fair Folk”. Many were small fairies or house guardians. The kings and queens of the Aes Sídhe were great nature spirits that dwelled within Tír na nóg. The common people of Ireland gave offerings to appease them. They are described as stunningly beautiful, powerful, and fierce guardians of their abodes, but no longer gods.
