Harlaton Settlement in Haranshire | World Anvil

Harlaton

This village of 350 people lies at the center of a broad belt of farmsteads in the best arable land of the shire, at the foot of The Terraces. It is a sleepy village, with only one tavern/hostelry (The Pitcher and the Pitchfork). Farmers trade some produce here at the Harlaton Market rather than take it onwards to Milborne, but most of the excess harvest goes to Milborne's open-air market where it's traded for farm implements, household items, and a few luxuries. The folk here are friendly but insular. The main topic of conversation here is the growth of the New Mire, and what is happening there, and why doesn't Old Man Carman do something about it.   The townsfolk all know each other and don't generally tend to seek out leadership among themselves. All the townsfolk have a great deal of respect for Hilda, who can generally be expected to give good guidance, or at least a good story. For anything that goes wrong in the town, most folk will blame Darius Carman, called "Old Man Carman" when he's not around.

Industry & Trade

Harlaton's main export is food for the rest of the valley. This ranges from root vegetables grown in The Terraces, to Corn and wheat grown in the more fertile areas of the valley. Close to town, smaller vegetables like cabbages and tomatos thrive. The crops keep the valley fed, but not much more, and now with the New Mire threatening farmland, there is a question if Harlaton can grow enough to sustain the rest of Haranshire.
