Susilo River

The Susilo river is the longest of the five great rivers of the Greater Zeshem Region. It winds down from the hills and grasslands of the Larazek Emberplains, coalescing from hundreds of tributaries and smaller rivers that all meet in the Vumega hills and form a single great waterway to the coast. It is the heart and soul of the Southern half of Holy Zeshema, which supplies massive amounts of water for agriculture, ecosystems, and fishing. The Susilo is a slow and meandering river of great width that truly is a vital artery of the entire region, sustaining whole biomes and economies with its rich black water.   But the people of the region see the Susilo as far more than a resource. In the Zesheko religion, the Susilo river is embodied as Sisilja, one of the Five Water Mothers - goddesses of life who are some of the most important spirits for mortal wellbeing.    The Susilo river is often seen as innately magical and intertwined with the attributes of the goddess. Its waters are said to be naturally fertile and magically linked with abundance, enriching any field they are watered with. Shrines along the Susilo river are said to ease the labors of childbirth, allow for the conception of children for the infertile, and protect children and mothers alike from disease or injury. The Susilo is also linked with herbs, gardening, and rice - especially native Zeshem rice variants - to the point that some distant farmers will buy jars of river water to sprinkle over their gardens and fields.

Geography

The Susilo River is 320 miles long, extending from the bloody hills of Vumega down to the rich port city of Polikitza. The early leg of the Susilo river, in the Vumega hills, is a fairly compact river that moves rather quickly and absorbs many small tributaries. In many ways, this part of the Susilo is more of a small drainage basin than a single compact river. The water collects in Lake Nyako and then moves down in a larger and slower river Westward, collecting more water from tributaries as it goes.   The eastern drainage basin is controlled by the Vumegan march kingdoms: a group of seven autonomous fiefdoms sworn to Holy Zeshema and known for their intense militarism. The Zeshem government takes full control of the river starting at Lake Nyako - where a large temple complex to the river goddess welcomes pilgrims, particularly those seeking help conceiving, healing, or delivering children.

Ecosystem

The Susilo river feeds a dense forest ecosystem, which sprawls out from the river into a much broader forest area. Along the river itself, there are many mangrove trees and river acacia. The Susilo river is home to dwarf crocodiles, flamingos, and giant catfish. This is also the Southern end of the range of the Larazek dwarf manatee, a small manatee that inhabits the tropical Western Larazek coast. A wide variety of parrots live here as well.
