Spiritual Empire of All Suneka
The Spiritual Empire of Suneka was an ancient empire that spanned much of the continent of Suneka and created the foundations for what is now the religion called Suneka.
The Spiritual Empire was a relatively brief state, lasting less than a century but burning bright while it lasted. It was built on the murderous regime of Amati, greatest assassin in history who used guile and intimidation to cow numerous kings and Tlakra. Amati's patchwork empire was decentralized and unstable, more aspirational and institutional. But, in 530 ME, Amati was overthrown by the great ghost-warrior Yezok and his army of Ghosts. Yezok, animated by twin desires for vengeance against Amati and order for his beloved kingdoms, was uncompromising and even irrational in his stubborn pursuit of law and uniformity. He demanded one kingdom, one culture, one society for all the world, to bring order and stability to all the living.
The ghosts of the Spiritual Empire were immortal, rejenerating even when destroyed - they could not be assassinated, overthrown, or resisted. Their living armies marched across the continent, and all opposing ghosts were bound and broken to become part of the new order. The Exorcist's Guild formed as a direct reaction to the Spiritual Empire: in 605 ME, they exorcised Yezok and his ghostly lieutenants. The Exorcists argued that the dead should never rule the living, and to this day use the Spiritual Empire as an example of "the tyranny of the undead." The modern Sunekan religion remembers the Spiritual Empire more fondly, though it does not call for a return to rule-by-ghosts; even they agree that the late Empire was excessively uncompromising and needed to be disbanded for true harmony to enter the hearts of the living.
