Rugon

Rugon is the World Tree, Lord of Beauty, the Blooming Knight, the artful and wise Cosmic Architect, and the merry holly-laden dancing king of fertility and abundance. He is a significant Uvaran God, not as theologically important as the 'Great Three' but absolutely central to agrarian religion. He represents civilization, fertility, plant growth, art, farming, gardening, and shepherding.    Rugon is worshipped most while crops are planted and in conjunction with his mother Kragen when crops are harvested. Farmers don't really ever stop praying to Rugon, though; from seed to flour, Rugon is always involved in a farmer's life. To farmers, Rugon is their god above all, There is a certain "rustic" quality to the God in the eyes of some; he is celebrated among the elites as a God of Beauty, Poetry, and Civilization, a divine lord who blesses the toiling peasantry and is beloved by them.    As a note, Rugon the god is not a real entity in this world. He is a character in Uvaran imagination, refined by centuries of meditation, politics, and cultural exchange. This does not make him unimportant. Emesh  often empowers paladins in his name and falsifies evidence of his existence, as part of his campaign of cultural plurality.

Rugon's Spiritual Role

Rugon is structure, custom, growth, and preservation. Where Ertinar is adaptation and acceptance - changing one's ways to accept the self - Rugon is continuity and perserverance - changing one's self to preserve one's ways. This is also a riff on Rugon's mother's position of the eternal form; Rugon is not perpetual or unchanging, but he does impose structure and meaning on the world in a consistent way. His mother is the mountain stone, enduring and everlasting; he is a gardener, growing and gently controlling growth. And, unlike Ertinar, who is a flawed heir to a perfect God, Rugon is framed as a wise and serene heir to a flawed and harsh god.    Like Ertinar and Hadash, Rugon is a divine intermediary that carries knowledge and prayers between the higher Gods and mortals. Rugon teaches mortals the correct ways to live, shapes the faithful into virtuous people and strong communities. And in exchange, he cares for, nourishes, and protects those who live good lives.    Lastly, as the world tree, Rugon is quite literally considered to be the binding structure of the world - it is by his unwavering strength that continents do not move, planes do not shift, and all things remain more or less as they are. One of Rugon's symbols, the symmetrical cross, represents the Four Compass Points that Rugon keeps in place. Rugon's roots and branches quite literally define the world, and the God represents the fundamental laws and rules of the universe as a whole.

Rugon the Character

Rugon tends to be a supporting character in many myths, often taking the role of a supportive and righteous companion. If a monster needs to be portrayed as unkillable, having Rugon fail to kill it demonstrates the point (Kragen is too unstoppable to play such a role if a hero has reached the pinnacle of success, they ride alongside Rugon. He is jolly, strong, magical, noble, and artful - a true hero and the leaderly ideal. However, as the world tree, he can never truly be fully central to any story. After all, it is only ever an emanation of Rugon that can appear.   Rugon's most well known myth is that of his ascension into the world tree. In his youth, Rugon was a beautiful prince; artful and naturally talented with magic. So brilliant was he that he became arrogant. In his arrogance, he sought to challenge one of the great Evils (Ubibi and Deverzain) to a battle of spells and blades. Rugon lost; he lost a foot (or a leg) as he crawled away to hide. After that, Rugon was cursed with indecision and flightiness. Kragen, his mother, called him home, and four times Rugon refused. The last time, the refusal became heated and Kragen lost her temper and attempted to forcibly imprison her son. Shapeshifting, Rugon fled. He became pollen in the wind, seeds carried by birds, dandelion puffs, and a bur on a galloping beast - but Kragen was always in pursuit. Rugon learned to hide among mortals, where he taught them the wisdom of the heavens and the ways to garden and nurture life; he gave them manners and taught them hierarchy. He learned to lead from humility rather than arrogance. But he also realized that, without a stable world, things can never truly get better. So, Rugon reached out to his brothers Hadash and Ertinar. They helped his mother seek redemption, they helped teach the mortals the ways of Uvara, and they provided Rugon with the magic rings and lore necessary for his great plan: to sacrifice his body to ascend and bring order to the world. Rugon took all the power he could and used it to become a sacred seed. His mother protected it in a ring of fire against all evil as he grew, until his branches and roots secure the heavens and the earth in place. With his body, he separated the realm of the Gods from our mortal realm, protecting the Gods from evil and allowing them to better protect mortalkind. The natural order was born.    Rugon is typically portrayed as a dryad man with a rainbow flower and one leg replaced by magical bronze. Or, alternatively a tree. While his avatars can appear in legends, he is always also a tree.
