Hadash

Hadash is the Scribe of the Gods and the Tinkerer of Heaven, Master of a Thousand Crafts, Lord of the Beasts and the Keeper of the Fires of Life. He is a significant Uvaran God, with a particular appeal for artisans or other commoners engaged in skilled non-agricultural labor. Hadash is the god of practical knowledge and mundane transformation. Hadash is one of the quietly worshipped gods, similar to his mother Silsta, but he is inescapable if you look to find him.   Hadash is the God of Artisans, Craftspeople, Animals, Food, Writing, and the Hearth. He is also associated with the movement of the sun, moons, and stars. It is said that he has the most children of any God - one for every craft and every kind of beast. While these lesser god-spirits can be preferred as more specific divine forces for guilds and craftsmen (particularly in symbolism), prayers and rituals to these entities almost always include Hadash.     As a note, Hadash the god is not a real entity in this world. He is a character in Uvaran imagination, refined by centuries of meditation, politics, and cultural exchange. This does not make him unimportant. Emesh often empowers paladins in his name and falsifies evidence of his existence, as part of his campaign of cultural plurality.

Hadash's Spiritual Role

Hadash is a god of private spaces and family. He is a god of creation in domestic spaces, in all aspects but biological. Uvaran adoption ceremonies often involve Hadash; household production and cleaning certainly do. Hadash was a God of household artisanship originally, rather than specialist craft works; while society has evolved to emphasize manufacturing out of the household in some places, Hadash stands squarely in that old way of life. It was Hadash that ensured Rugon's grains became healthy food, that Kragen's clay became pottery, that Ertinar's knowledge became books, and that Varsha's children were safely sheltered and given fire. Hadash, like the other second-generation non-Primordial gods, is an intermediary god that negotiates between great forces of wisdom and magic and life, and the basic Stildanian household.    Hadash, like his mother Silsta, is also known as a domestic caretaker of primordial Gods. Hadash cares for Varsha - and when paired with her, is the intermediary that simplifies and personalizes her essence of life and survival.    On a certain level, Hadash is the god of property. He transforms and protects property - he keeps the household animals healthy and abundant, he protects the tools and guides the artisan's hands, he strengthens the home and protects it from vermin and thieves. Ritual blessing of items and buildings also reinforces ownership of them: if a traveler repairs an abandoned building and blesses it regularly by Hadash, that traveler has a legal claim to that house as a residence. Of course, the property element does not pass down to the land itself, and framing it exclusively in terms of property law misses the relational and rightful-use elements of the rites.   There are a few odd idiosynchrasies with Hadash, though. For one, Hadash is strongly associated with taverns, alcohol, and social drinking spaces. This has oddly enough given Hadash the party-god and revelry-god status in certain contexts, which can strike outsiders as somewhat odd for a domestic god characterized as shy. But there is a long history of Hadash being associated with alcohol, and even people using intoxicated states to commune with the god. Additionally, weaving and spinning are entirely seen as Silta's domain, and certain occupations and crafts tend to fall under other more-relevant Gods instead of Hadash (carpentry, smithing, stonemasonry, ship-making, and candle-making are all other God's domains).

Hadash as a Character

Hadash is a less visible character in most myths than his cousins. It is said that he created eagles, hawks, and owls for the gods to help pull the moons and sun across the sky as a child- and as a reward, he was made the Tinkerer of the Gods. In another, he sought to take a lover to carry across the sky with him, but the lover grew too curious and fell over the side of the chariot - becoming the firs ghost.   As a general note, Hadash is characterized as shy, meek, and quiet - but he does have a rowdy side, particularly when he drinks and feasts. Hadash is known for a great appetite, and when he whets it (or in some tales, drinks deeply) he suddenly becomes gregarious and flamboyant.    Hadash is represented as a large man with lion-like hair and eyes like dawn and dusk, covered in clay.

Divine Domains

Hadash's domains are context-dependent:
  • His major domains are: Crafts, the Hearth, Animals
  • His minor domains are: Alcohol, Animal Husbandry, Pottery, Hospitality, Creation, Mathematics
  • His occupational domains are: Potters, Brewers, Calligraphers/Scribes, Cobblers, Leatherworkers, Furriers, Alchemists, Apothecaries, Glassworkers, Innkeeps, Cooks, Barbers, Bakers, Tinkerers
Faithful houses have small shrines to Hadash over or near their hearths - it is a standard fixture in Uvaran homes, practically invisible to those accustomed to them. The backrooms of Uvaran shops typically have one as well.

Divine Symbols & Sigils

Hadash's symbols are the eagle and the clay brazier.

Holidays

Hadash's great holiday is Hadashten, on Kornkle (December) 16. On this day, the hearths are blessed with garlands, and community leaders dress in cheery garb to share with their neighbors.    Hadash the Scribe has a minor but notable presence in Allmoot Day, a Hainish holiday on Forald (June) 1st.   In majority-Kivish countries, Uvarans bring out statues of Hadash and decorate them with garlands to celebrate the Kivish holiday of Wonder's Day on Forald (June) 20th.    Hadash has a significant presence in Kianahass, a Lunar cult holiday devoted to Emesh on Shernmoy (February) 25th; Hadash is also present for Direntun, a Lunar cult holiday for Orchid of Blue on Holnin (September) 25th.   Hadash has a minor presence as the moon-changed in All-Moon's Day on Holnin (September) 10th.
