Mental characteristics
Personal history
In Arthur's early life, he grew up in South Soffit and was always getting into mischief. It was either asking too many questions, or taking things apart, or sneaking into places he shouldn't; he always seemed to be getting into trouble. It wasn't until Arthur found his love of the sciences in school that he really flourished and seemed to find an outlet for all of his curiosity and energy. Alistair catches a young Arthur "tinkering" on one of the loom machines. When he checks the damage Alistair finds out that Arthur not only fixed it but made it more efficient. From that time on Arthur becomes the factory mechanic. Arthur creates a an emergency failsafe for the looms. If anything where to get caught in the loom it will trigger a switch which shuts the machine off. From then on, if he was ever interested in anything he would learn everything he could about the subject of engineering and science. Alistair even helps to patent his new loom design in Arthurs name. He was so gifted that he even decided to go to Briarbank College, with some encouragement and on a scholarship of course, where Arthur would find the second love of his life, Betty. Arthur met Beatrice literally bumping into her on the college ground while having his nose in a book. It was love at first sight for Arthur. He did everything he could to impress Betty, even learning the language of flowers so she would always know what he was thinking. From the day they started dating, Arthur would spend as much time as possible with Betty. They became inseparable and even getting married, having red chrysanthemums at their wedding, as Arthur learned they are a flower that says "I love you."
During The Last Great War, Arthur served as a scientist aiding the war effort. Unbeknownst to him, the technology he was working on was directly utilized in The Electric Event that ended the war. There is no public record of his involvement with this technological advancement, but it was discovered by Pierce Hunter, who now holds this secret.

History
When Charlie was 12 and began learning how to take over the family business from her father, he hired Arthur Hurley to be her tutor, as she struggled with reading and dyslexia. Arthur’s patience and kindness got her through tough days then and the tough days of today. "No matter the problem with enough knowledge and ingenuity you can find an answer" is a quote that echos in her head anytime she runs into problem, though she has forgotten the end: "even if that means asking for help." He read her all of the classics and taught her how to combat her dyslexia, so she could read for herself. She became a voracious reader and a lover of history. She stopped showing up for her lessons around the time the smear article came out. Her last lesson was the last time she saw or spoke to him.
History
When Cy was about 10 years old, his parents tragically died in an accident. Arthur's late wife, Betty, was Cy's maternal aunt, so they took him in and raised him as their own.
Over the years, Cy has remained very close to Arthur, who guided him as best he could and helped him academically so Cy could pursue his interest in archeology.
After Betty's passing a year ago, neither Cy nor Arthur could cope well with the loss and instead avoided their respective feelings on the incident. Cy missed the funeral for an archeological expedition in Oldfaire, but Arthur does not blame him for it. The two of them would still regularly meet for tea and to catch up, even before they were brought into Candela Obscura.
Commonalities & Shared Interests
Both of them are very academic, with Arthur fostering a deep love of learning in Cy.
