The History of Gundam - Centennial of a dream so far

Humans are the only known sentient beings to have populated the solar system. In the ages before the new timekeeping was introduced and the Federation was formed, the solar system was mostly populated by the many nations of old Earth and their colonies of Mars and in space.

Current Species & Cultures

The human space is divided between Earth, Mars and Space and while they each have their own cultures and identities, all of them can trace their history back to old earth.
  • Earth: Earth´s culture is a divided one, between the rich and the poor. It is a cultural melting pot, and the place in the solar system where traditions from humanities old nations have survived the longest. You can still see people wearing traditional clothing and practicing old religions from all over the globe in the sprawls of Earth
  • Mars: The culture and history of Mars is the most far removed from old Earth. The people of Mars value stability, order and hierarchy. They have developed their own unique traditions separate from Earth and have homogenised their population to the point where few people know or care where their on Earth their ancestors came from, they are all Martians first and foremost.
  • Space: Spacers are the most divers group in the solar system, their culture and lifestyle vary from station to station with some stations having developed their own identities over generations and others still being heavily influenced by the cultures of the first people that settled there. Not all who live in space identify as spacers, stations that have very close relations to Earth, Mars or the Federations likely see themselves as a part of that group first, and as a spacer second.

Needs & Relations

Earth and Mars are old rivals, locked into a complex political relationship to prevent another, even more devastating war. Mars holds the stronger position in this relationship, as Earth has slowly fallen behind economically and technologically. Mars is also the home to the de-facto capital of the Federation and so holds a lot of symbolic power.   While all planets and most space colonies are self sufficient to at least a basic degree, they rely on each other for specialty goods, knowledge and culture. They are also all part of the Federation, willingly or not.   Below are some examples (but far from all) of the groups reliance on eachother.
  • Mars provide Earth and space with technological and scientific advancements, trade and governance.
  •
  • Earth provide Mars and space materialy with grains, animal products and biological samples and as such is vital to humanities expansion. Earth is also still the cultural center of the two superpowers and Mars is seen as bland and unimaginative in comparison.
  •
  • Space colonies are large population centers with thousands of people living and working on them. Many people live out their entire lives in the colonies and far from all of them work with the stations major export. All but a few colonies serve either the Federation directly or one of its major corporations and most of the colonies fall into one of these categories:
    1. Trade hubs
    2. Tech and Science Development
    3. Mining and refinement
  • The exceptions to these are so called rebel-colonies. These are independent and do not serve any but themselves (or the Alliance of Zeon, but more on that later) and as such do not benefit from the support of the rest of the Federation. They are usually poor, isolated and forced to make due with what they can grow, manufacture and scavenge themselves.
