J-Series

The mobile suits designed and manufactured by Anaheim Electronics designated as the J-Series have been the mainstay of the Federations mobile suit forces for nearly a century. Starting with the RGM-79 GM in the later years of the Calamity War and continuing all the way up to the latest model, the RGM-96X Jesta, the J-series has proven itself again and again as a versatile, easily maintained and affordable mobile suit for the Federation military.

RGM-79-GM

The GM (pronounced "Jim") was developed in direct response to the Martian Republics Zaku I during the Calamity War. Contrary to popular belief the UN knew about Mars´s efforts to develop mobile suit-type weapons long before the raid on Luna that marked the first ever use of a mobile suit in combat. As such the UN had commissioned Anaheim Electronics to develop mobile suits of their own, something AE had already been working on for near a decade as a part of a private enterprise. The result was the Gundam Frame, an amazingly powerful mobile suit that could take on dozens of Zakus and still win. But Gundams were impossibly expensive to build and maintain, and due to its control system each one was not only unique, but took a terrible toll on its pilot. The UN needed a mass-produced, easy to pilot and versatile mobile suit that could be fielded on-mass, and so the GM was developed. Based on technology from the Gundam project and lessons learned in combat with the Zakus and mobile armors of Mars, the GM was made to be just "good-enough". A simple frame with easily replaced components, moderate armor and modular equipment slots made the GM a favorite among pilots, who often customized them after the needs of the mission. At the end of the war, the numbers of GMs fielded by the Federation matched Mars´s Zakus, and even after the Treaty of Luna the factories of Anaheim Electronics were still producing GMs by the hundreds every month.   Nearly one hundred years later the GM is still a common sight throughout human space used by civilians as construction and mining equipment, by police in the outer colonies and for training at trade schools that lack funding for more modern mobile suits.   The GM featured many variants, some made in such few numbers that they were never official and have been lost to history. Here are a few of the more common ones:

GM Cannon

A GM fitted with twin cannons mounted above the shoulders for artillery support. To handle the increased weight and space of the guns and their ammunition the legs were strengthened and the back mounted rocket boosters of the base GM was removed.

GM Sniper

A GM with lightened armor, enhanced sensors and armed with a long range beam rifle for reconnaissance and sabotage missions. A favorite among veteran pilots and one of the few variants to survive past the introduction of the RGM-89 Jegan. The GM Sniper still sees limited use by the Federation on Earth, although the modern variant is heavily upgraded.

A early war GM, still in a factory paint scheme. Many GMs never had a chance to get camouflage paint as they were rushed to the frontlines. Later in the war it was realised that camouflage rarely made much difference anyway, due to the advanced sensors of most enemy mobile suits.

RGM-89 Jegan

While Anaheim Electronics made several attempts at a GM 2 and GM 3, it was not until the launch of the Jegan that they found the "true" successor to the GMs fame. With the Jegan Anaheim Electronics decided to study what combat roles a military mobile suit actually does best and focus on these. What they came up with is a high-manoeuvrability, close-combat mobile suit with advanced sensors and powerful weapon options. A MS perfectly suited for duels with other MS, pursuit of hostile forces and attacks on enemy ships. It´s the first mass-produced mobile suit to feature a panoramic cockpit, a ball-type cockpit that seats the pilot in the center of a 360 degree screen offering previously unprecedented levels of situational awareness. As it was never designed for extended, long-range combat the base model lacks heavy armor and long range firepower, to cover these weaknesses several variants were designed. Only a few of these were put into production though, as the base model was deemed more than adequate for the Earth-Mars Federations wich at the time had not seen all out war in more than 20 years.   The Jegan is still in use with the Federation and serves as the standard mobile suit given to most pilots. But with the "century of peace" coming to an end the Jegan is showing its age and is scheduled for replacement by the end of DC0099.

Stark Jegan

A missile destroyer Jegan, equipped with either 4 long-range, high-yield, anti-ship missiles or 6 multi-purpose, high-speed missiles on its back. The Stark Jegan is modified with more powerful targeting sensors and heavier front facing armor to help in its task of destroying enemy capital ships and infrastructure.

EWAC Jegan

A electronic warfare and early warning Jegan. Heavily modified to support the use of a large array of sensors and computing systems to detect and disrupt enemy electronic systems. The EWAC Jegan is rare but extremely useful as its sensors and radar systems are powerful enough to detect enemy MS and ships even through heavy minovsky particle disturbance. Once an enemy is found the EWAC Jegan relays this information to the rest of the fleet, including other friendly mobile suits, making the EWAC Jegan a massive force multiplier. To handle the power load of these advanced systems this variant has been stripped of many of the weapons found on a standard Jegan. It also features a tandem seat cockpit for one pilot and one electronic warfare officer

RIX-003 Cannongan

An offshoot of the Stark Jegan project, the Cannongan started it´s development as a alternative weapons loadout for the Stark Jegan but soon spiraled into a variant of its own. The Cannongan mounts two beam cannons over its shoulder in the same style as the GM Cannon and features additional armor and structural strengthening to support the mas of these weapons. To maintain cost-effectiveness the Cannongan removes much of the Jegans thrusters, somewhat reducing its speed and manoeuvrability but still performing better than most MS with the same amount of firepower. The Cannongan was not widely adopted by the Federation, most admirals seeing it as old-fashioned and much preferring the Stark Jegan. A handful of Cannongan were made before the project was canceled and the majority of these are fielded by the 12th Noctis Battalion on Mars, where the Cannongans long range is appreciated.

RGM-96 Jesta

Little is known about the Federations latest frontline mobile suit, other than that it´s produced by Anaheim Electronics and is a part of the "J-Series" line of mobile suits. This implies that the Jesta will be fast, maneuverable and mass-produced, but so far all information on the new mobile suit is classified. Only a few have been seen in public, most notably in DC0096 at the opening ceremony of Anaheim Electronics new MS factory on Luna where it was announced that the new factory would be producing RGM-96 Jesta´s for the Federation Navy and Behemoth.

What is believed to be a standard model Jesta, painted in Behemoth colors. Classified equipment apear to have been edited out of the picture.
