Homer

In the oppressive, sound-dampened halls of Carradh Keep, where the dark oak walls seem to listen and the black iron reinforcements chill the air, Homer is a ghost in the machinery of House Carradh. While the noble family members exchange sharp words and sharper threats, Homer moves through the shadows in total, heavy silence.

Homer is a stout, broad-shouldered man of indeterminate age. His skin has the greyish, leathery quality of someone who has spent decades in the Shadowfell, and his eyes—a startling, piercing blue—are his only means of truly "speaking." He is typically found maintaining the heavy black iron fixtures of the Keep or polishing the rare dark oak paneling with pungent shadow-oils.

He wears the charcoal-grey livery of House Carradh, though his version is reinforced with thick leather patches on the knees and elbows for the heavy labor he performs. Around his neck, he carries a small, charcoal-stained slate and a piece of chalk, though he rarely uses them for more than a single word or a floor number.

Homer is the ultimate observer. Because he cannot speak, people often forget he is in the room, discussing sensitive trade prices or political assassinations as if he were merely furniture. He is patient, meticulous, and possesses a surprisingly gentle touch for a man of his bulk.

The "Silence": It is rumored among the other servants that Homer didn’t lose his voice to an accident or birth. Some say Olisk Carradh paid a shadow-weaver to "stitch" Homer’s voice away so he could serve as a private valet during the house’s most secretive meetings without the risk of him ever testifying. Others whisper that Homer sold his own voice to a creature in the Drowned Quarter in exchange for the life of a fellow servant.
