Dunnage Row

If the Noble Docks are the city’s velvet-lined purse, Dunnage Row is its bruised and salty throat. Located in the heart of the Drowned Quarter, this street is a soggy, treacherous stretch of leaning shanties, sagging boardwalks, and buildings that seem to stay upright only by leaning against one another for support.

The ground here is rarely solid; the "street" is a patchwork of rotting ship timbers and heavy stone slabs that squelch underfoot, oozing black, oily water with every step. It is the primary haunt for sailors from the Public Docks who have a few coins to burn and a desperate need to forget the Shadowfell’s oppressive gloom.

A thick, salty mist clings to everything. Lanterns here are encased in thick green glass to protect them from the spray, casting a sickly, underwater hue over the street. Unlike the rest of Gloomwrought, Dunnage Row is loud. Fiddle music from the bars competes with the sound of drunken brawls and the rhythmic thump-slap of the rising tide against the pylons. Many of the lodging houses burn cheap, pungent peat or dried seaweed for warmth, filling the air with a smoke that makes eyes water and throats itch.
