City Mint

This fortress of wealth serves as the stamping and casting center for the official coinage of the Free City of Greyhawk.

Its impenetrable stone vaults, lined with lead and warded by magic mouth spells, house the city's vast reserves of precious metals. A permanent guard detail consisting of one elite patrol and two standard patrols of the City Watch ensures its security.

Each vault is dedicated to a specific precious metal or minted currency, with 80-90% of the value held in ingots or bars rather than coins. Entering the mint requires passage through a fortified entry hall, a bustling manufacturing workshop, and finally, a reinforced hallway with ten-foot-thick granite walls.

Within this last chamber, a young mage (level 2-5)—assigned by the Guild to stand watch—wears a ring of teleportation, ready to summon reinforcements from the Guildhall or University of Magical Arts at the first sign of trouble.

The value of stored wealth fluctuates daily as reserves shift, but common estimates include:

  • Platinum: 1d100 × 1,000 gp
  • Gold: 2d20 × 1,000 gp
  • Silver: 1d10 × 1,000 gp
  • Electrum: 1d8 × 1,000 gp

The city no longer mints copper, tin, or iron coins due to the inflation triggered by vast adventurer hoards pouring into Greyhawk. These metals are now considered worthless for trade within the city.

The Mintworkers' Guild

A secretive and insular organization, the Mintworkers' Guild operates with an air of quiet exclusivity. Membership is strictly hereditary, and under no circumstances will the guild accept dwarves—a policy that chafes at Glodreddi Bakkanin , Inspector of Taxes, though even he acknowledges the wisdom of barring those with a legendary lust for gold and silver.

The guild is headquartered within the City Mint, a fortified, windowless structure in Clerkburg, where the coinage of Greyhawk is forged in roaring furnaces and cast into precise molds. Guarded day and night by an elite detachment of Greyhawk’s military, the Mint is one of the most heavily secured locations in the city. Newly minted coins are transported under heavy escort to the city's coffers before being released into circulation, ensuring that Greyhawk’s wealth remains untouched by thieves—or meddling dwarves.
