Scope
The motivation behind building Greland
The world of Greland was created to indulge my passion for worldbuilding, to create vibrant and engaging world for my RPG players, and to attempt to address some of my own issues with similar settings created by others.
The goal of the project
I've already got more from this world than I expected at the beginning - multiple years of consistent game set in this world, with players genuinely invested in the world and its characters.
Greland's Unique Selling point
The pitch was 'Game of Thrones without the bigotry'. A 'fantasy medieval europe' inspired game where gender and racial inequality were explicitly excluded from the setting and where LGBT and disabled characters were prominent at all levels of society. Maybe not the most original idea in the world, but it provided my players with the game we all wanted.
Theme
Genre
The world of Greland is one of low-fantasy (where humans are, at least within the known world, the only sentient species and where 'magic' is the stuff of myth and legend, tall stories and mad prophets). It is inspired by medieval europe, with fuedal lords and ladies struggling for power and knights in shining armour leading armies in battle.
Character Agency
The game has so far seen characters rise from hedge-knights, homeless and poor, to landed lords and now dukes overseeing several other lords ladies and knights under their banner. It has seen landed lords rise in open rebellion against their queen and characters travel through time to influence the events which led to the foundation of the kingdoms that rule the land to this day.
