The Harbor

A notable feature of the harbor (besides the Island) is the dramatic changes wrought by the tides. When high tides roll in, the entire channel is deep enough for even the largest of tall ships to pass safely into the harbor and its docks. However, at the lowest tides, most of the channel is so shallow that intrepid (or suicidal) souls can conceivably wade their way from shore to shore (if one is dextrous, speedy, and lucky enough to avoid hidden dangers and sucking mud traps).   At the average low tides, the passage between the Island rises above the waterline, allowing a limited window to maintain and use the road.   Large vessels must time their arrivals and departures carefully, and it's wisest to avoid the shallower side of the Island regardless.
