Could it be that the linked colonies, while traversing space, were also traveling through time and possible realities? On a quantum level.
Could this journey be revealing countless other possible Milky Way galaxies, all with vastly different versions of Earth, etc?
Could Gothenya simply be a quantum variant of Earth? The lost colony might have been separated from the others not just in physical space, but in quantum timelines.
