Alfred Pennyworth

Mr Alfred Spencer Pennyworth (formerly Beagle) (a.k.a. Penny 1)

As butler and foster father to Bruce Wayne, Alfred Pennyworh was instrumental in the creation and continued existence of the Batman, despite his own misgivings.   In 2012 he died of a sudden heart attack while taking tea with his grandson, Damian Wayne. He was buried in the Wayne family plot in Gotham Cemetery.

Education

He left school at 14 to take a job as a gardener. During the war he was trained by the military as a field medic. He gain a Bachelor's degree in English Literature in 2007, followed by a Masters in 2009.

Employment

He joined the Dorset Regiment (Light Infantry) aged 16, and remained in service until 1947, seeing combat in France and Africa. He then got a job as a stage hand at the Shakespeare Memorial Theatre in Stratford. Later he was to become an actor, performing in a number of Shakespearean production as well as other plays. He was recruited to MI6 in 1953 and served four years, mainly stationed in North Africa. Following his father's death in 1947 entered the service of the Wayne family as Butler, though he also performed the role of bodyguard for Thomas Wayne. He remained in the service of the Wayne Family until his death.

Accomplishments & Achievements

In 1943 he was awarded the Military Medal for bravery under fire. In 1945 he was awarded the African Star for his part in Operation Compass, and later the same year, the Distinguished Conduct Medal.   He played the lead role in a production of Henry V, directed by Sir Peter Hall, at the Shakespeare Memorial Theater in 1951. The run received mixed reviews, but Stage described it as "a touching and poignant performance."

Morality & Philosophy

Pennyworth was raised Anglican, and though he was not a regular church-goer the moral tenant he was taught in Sunday school would shape much of his life. He believed strongly in importance of duty and loyalty.

He learnt taught himself conversational French and Arabic while serving in the military, and prior to his deployment by MI6 as a filed agent, he was taught to read and write them as well.
