Thumrin
History
Thumrin was established at the fringe of the desert bordering the fertile orcish town of Krarzeg. Thumrin was built at the end of the newly formed aqueducts that had been completed recently throughout the Luminara Territory. On the outskirts of the city was a temple devoted to Felotl God of Light that contained the abericlase and yielded a prosperous bounty and promises of technology. The Abericlase turned the surrounding desert into a lush and fertile zone, allowing agriculture to flourish despite the harsh conditions. With the help of the Technara Territory the city was able to place solar panels and solar energy converters powered by the abericlase that eventually gave them modern marvels in the heat of the desert such as electricity and even conditioned air.
When the abericlase went dark an overwhelming surge of necrotic energy was expelled from the temple. From the surrounding temple, legions of undead horrors spilled forth, attacking the city and spreading chaos. Skeletons, wights, and abominable creatures rose from the sands, overwhelming Thumrin’s defenses. The city suffered immense loss of life as the undead rampaged, destroying entire districts and slaughtering thousands. Survivors either fled toward Hacuito or hid within fortified areas of the city. The necrotic energy seeped into the land, turning fertile fields into barren, tainted ground. Crops withered, and the once-lush surroundings were replaced by darkened sands and corrupted plant life.
The surviving citizens were saved by the intervention of a faction that came to be known as the Firebound Covenant. These individuals were former alchemists and mages who had been experimenting with fire magic and divine purification alchemy prior to the fall of the abericlase. Using their knowledge, they devised methods to repel the undead and reclaim small parts of the city. The Firebound constructed magical wards powered by enchanted flames, which created safe zones within the city and developed techniques to cleanse smaller sections of the land from necrotic corruption, enabling survivors to grow meager crops and access water. The Firebound also established a strict hierarchy, uniting the remaining inhabitants under their leadership and forbidding anyone from venturing into the cursed ruins.
Today Thumrin is a fractured city divided into three distinct zones:
- The Burning Sanctuaries: Fortified districts protected by flame wards. These areas are illuminated by perpetual firelight, creating a stark contrast against the darkened ruins.
- The Ruined Temple of Felotl: The epicenter of the catastrophe, where the darkened Abericlase lies dormant. This area is overrun with undead and riddled with lingering necrotic energy.
- The Tainted Outskirts: The lands surrounding Thumrin, which remain cursed and sparsely inhabited by scavengers, deserters, and wandering undead.
Approximately 8,000 survivors live within the Burning Sanctuaries. The population consists primarily of humans and dwarves, along with a small number of fire-aligned tieflings who have aligned themselves with the Firebound Covenant.
