Imperial Army

The Imperial Army consists of the armies of noble auxiliary who serve the Gold Empire directly on campaign either during the Conquests or the invasions of foreign lands. These are the mortal men and women of different species who fight and bleed for their Gold Emperor, fighting at the back of his holy legions and under the supervision of the dragon-riding nobles.
The Imperial Army is administrated by the Copper Metal Church, and Copper Metal clerics serve alongside Imperial regiments to protect their souls from temptation and their physical bodies from harm, though command of the Imperial Army often falls to Holy Knights or nobility. Lord Executioner Goldbrand Cyne is the supreme commander of the Imperial Army, tasked with overseeing its deployments, approving the dispositions of its expeditionary forces and entrusting the command of its complement to promising noble commanders.

Culture

Most of the Gold Empire's military forces are the vassal auxilia or royal armies specific to each province, charged with keeping the peace, supressing revolts and supporting the ambitions of their monarchs and nobility both on Dain and around the world. Such soldiers have varying levels of respect within the cultures of the Gold Empire, but this is not the case for the Imperial Army formations.
Each province is required by law to supply a number of regiments and men-at-arms to the Imperial Army, as determined by the precise calculations of the Copper Metal Church, and these regiments are nothing like their provincial cousins. These regiments are well-trained, well-equiped and blessed with a sound moral compass due to the implanting of Clerical Officers among their number. The Imperial Regiments are veterans, and many of them have served the Gold Empire with distinction for centuries, their names and titles known across Dain almost as well as the Knightly Orders they support in battle.
Taking the Gold
While the prestige of joining the Imperial Army varies from province to province, in many places "taking the gold" is a sign that you are among the most promising of young people in your province, and soldiers who have served in the imperial army often go on to become civic leaders. Service in the Imperial Army also entitles you to lands in conquered territories and settling of new lands, so you get to be a stakeholder at the very edge of imperial territory, where you can build you fortune and happiness.
"Taking the gold" is the informal name for the Kron Yuvon, where new recruits in a regiment officially leave their old royal armies and join the wider imperial army, as marked by the ritual addition of a small golden dragonscale to their armor, alongside a larger copper disk which will hold the soldier's name, birthdate and home province.
Taking the Black
While Taking the Gold describes the process of new recruits and the average soldier in the Imperial Army fighting for the Gold Empire, a select few will stand out from their peers in determination, brutality or courage. Such brave soldiers are rewarded by the Lord Executioner himself by Taking the Black, marking their armor with a black dragonscale and becoming professional, permanent soldiers in service to the Lord Executioner himself. The Executioner Regiments fight at the tip of the Imperial spear into new territory, supporting their commander in his ambitions and in taking new lands for the Gold-Empire. They are better trained and equipped than their gold counterparts, and they are also paid very well for their trouble.
The veterans from Executioner Regiments return with great wealth to their old homes, and many find themselves in positions of power, supported by their commander even after their service is over. Other Imperial Soldiers regard the Executioner Regiments with a mix of awe and apprehension, awe at their heroism and battle honors which can rival knights, and apprehension at their single-minded determination and support of the lord Executioner.
