Sandpoint Town Council (SAND-point TOUN KOUN-suhl)
Partially-elected Leaders of Sandpoint
The ruling government of Sandpoint, led by the Mayor of Sandpoint, Kendra Deverin.
Structure
Four seats in the Town Council are held by the heads of the four founding families, currently Kendra Deverin, Ethram Valdemar, Lonjiku Kaijitsu, and Titus Scarnetti. One seat is held by the mayor, who is elected for life by the citizens and serves as an autocratic executive power. Two other seats are also elected by the citizens. All elected positions serve a four year term, and elections are held on 7 Neth, the anniversary of Sandpoint's founding.
When the elected mayor is also the head of a founding family, which so far has always been the case, then those two seats are merged and a third elected seat is created. The current elected officials are Abstalar Zantus (term up in 4708), Ilsoari Gandethus (term up in 4710), and Kaye Teserani (term up in 4707, the current year.)
Culture
Sandpoint was founded by merchant families, so there is an unspoken desire not to limit trade. Indeed, there are few formal laws in Sandpoint, with most dealing with taxation or regulating the bureaucracy of Sandpoint's market days. That said, Mayor Deverin especially wishes Sandpoint to be a place where anyone can succeed at mercantile efforts, so she has worked hard to keep Sandpoint's market from being unduly controlled by the wealthiest townsfolk, something that Titus Scarnetti finds an annoyance.
Public Agenda
To guide Sandpoint toward prosperity and peace.
History
There have been three mayors of Sandpoint, all members of the Deverin family, starting with town founder Amos Deverin. The previous mayor was Kendra's brother Fenchus. After Fenchus's death, Kendra initially did not want to run for mayor, but Sandpoint's late sheriff Casp Avertin convinced her to run. She won in a landslide, which did not sit well with her opponent Titus Scarnetti.
