Mulhorand
Mulhorand is a nation in East Faerûn ruled by the god-kings of the Mulhorandi Pantheon.
History
Mulhorand's Creation
The land that would become Mulhorand was previously a part of the Imaskari Empire. In ancient times, the Imaskari opened two portals to another world on the Material Plane, and through these portals they captured and enslaved thousands of humans and brought them back to Toril. The Imaskari then sealed the portals, permanently trapping the two groups of slaves in the new world.
The slaves continued to pray to the gods from their home world. Ao, the overgod of the Faerûnian Pantheon, heard their prayers, and he allowed the slaves' gods to extend their influence into Toril through mortal manifestations. These new divine mortals joined forces with the slaves to overthrow the Imaskari and found the new nations of Mulhorand and Unther, one for each of the portals that were opened. The surviving Imaskari retreated into the Underdark, eventually forming the Deep Imaskari.
The new Mulhorandi Pantheon was unique in that the deities walked beside their worshippers on the Material Plane, and they became "god-kings" for their new nation. The god-kings would, however, seek to break the barriers constructed by the Imaskari that prevented them from connecting with their essences in their true home, the plane of Heliopolis in Arcadia.
The Red Wizards' Betrayal
In 922, a Mulhorandi colony named Thay, led by a sect who called themselves the Red Wizards, razed the city of Delhumide and declared their freedom from the god-kings of Mulhorand. The Red Wizards then founded their new independent nation of Thay.
The God-Kings Leave During the Time of Troubles
In 1358, during the Time of Troubles when the Faerûnian gods were forced down from the Outer Planes to walk with their followers on Toril, the Mulhorandi god-kings also had their powers significantly reduced. Some of the Mulhorandi god-kings, including Osiris, attempted to absorb power from their aasimar offspring, but their attempts caused their descendants to enter into comas.
At the end of Time of Troubles, Ao dissolved the barriers created by the Imaskari Empire, allowing the Mulhorandi god-kings to rejoin their primary essences in Heliopolis. Not all of the deities returned to Heliopolis, however; Geb, who had been ordered by Ra not to return to Heliopolis, convinced his followers to join him in traveling to the Elemental Plane of Earth and begin building a new version of the Cavern Under the Stars.
After the god-kings left, their aasimar descendants woke up from their comas with new divine abilities. For the first time, the nation was governed by true mortals.
The Spellplague and the Return of the Imaskari
In 1385, the Spellplague caused the worlds Toril and Abeir to merge together, and Mulhorand was reduced to a blasted range of mountains, chasms, rivers of lava, and earthmotes. Many Mulhorandi were killed, and others were transported by the Spellplague's chaos to Abeir. Some survivors escaped into the Elemental Plane of Earth and joined the followers of Geb in the Cavern Under the Stars.
In the aftermath of the Spellplague, the Deep Imaskari returned to the surface and explored the ruins of Mulhorand. The Mulhorandi survivors, reeling from the chaos on the surface and now without the help of their god-kings, were again forced to work under the tyranny of the Imaskari. In the ruins of Mulhorand, the Imaskari built a new empire they called High Imaskar.
With the majority of the nation's population scattered or killed, worship of the Mulhorandi Pantheon dropped sharply, greatly reducing the gods' influence on Faerûn as a whole.
The Second Sundering and the Mulhorandi Rebellion
In 1484, two years into the Second Sundering while the Faerûnian gods attempted to improve their portfolios and Ao was rewriting the Tablets of Fate, the Mulhorandi god-kings also aimed to improve their standing on Toril.
The god-kings returned to Mulhorand as divine manifestations, and they selected their "Chosen" from their aasimar descendants. The Chosen assembled their forces from the remaining Mulhorandi survivors, and they began the Mulhorandi Rebellion against High Imaskar. The Second Sundering came to an end in 1487 - as Abeir and Toril were again completely separated and Ao finished recreating the Tablets of Fate - and the Mulhorandi Rebellion ended in success.
The Imaskari survivors fled into the nearby desert. The gods' divine manifestations decided to remain in Mulhorand and again rule as god-kings as they did before the Time of Troubles. After several years of peace, the Chosen of the Mulhorandi gods lost their divine gifts, but they remained in positions of authority.
