Fugue Plane

Theologians believe that the Fugue Plane, located within the larger Astral Plane, is where mortal souls from the Material Plane are judged after they die.

The Afterlife

Theologians believe that when a mortal from the Material Plane dies, their soul leaves their body and starts its journey to the Outer Planes. The soul must first travel to the Fugue Plane, where its fate will be decided.

  • If a mortal worships a god before dying, and that god approves of them, a representative of that god then travels to the Fugue Plane and escorts the soul to their domain in the Outer Planes to exist for the rest of eternity.
  • If a mortal doesn't worship a god before dying, or if the god doesn't approve of their worship, or if they worshipped a false god, the soul's fate is decided by Kelemvor, the god of judgement. Kelemvor may decide to charge that soul to serve him instead, or he may decide that the soul should be absorbed into the Wall of the Faithless where it will stay for eternity.

Deals With Devils

According to theologians, when a soul is awaiting judgement in the Fugue Plane, devils from the Nine Hells of Baator may approach the soul and offer it chances at power and immortal pleasures. Whether it's because a soul has become tired of waiting or wants to escape Kelemvor's judgement, some do accept the offers of devils, adding them to the ranks of Asmodeus and the Lords of the Nine for eternity.
