Draveasin Species in Glenerene | World Anvil

Draveasin

The Draveasin is an aquatic species that terrifies many who sail the seas. While not outwardly vicious unless provoked their silent nature means avoiding them in the water is difficult. They are known to be fierce predators and don't often stop till they have devoured whatever prey they set their eyes on.

Basic Information

Anatomy

They are a large creature growing to be about 4 feet tall and 6 feet long. They are pinnipeds with large powerful back flippers and strong claw-footed front legs. The most terrifying feature of the draveasin is the draconic appearing head with a long sharp muzzle that is home to large serrated fangs. In addition they have three large horns, three on their head and one off the back of their necks thought to serve as a defense mechanism against larger predators.   An interesting fact is that despite their reptilian appearance, they are capable of giving live birth and otherwise behave like mammals. It is unknown why this is though some believe it to be Earendil, God of the Seas trying to confuse people.

Genetics and Reproduction

Mating season is between May and August and gestation lasts 11.5 to 12 months resulting in a single pup.

Growth Rate & Stages

Pup:

The stage after birth in which a young Draveasin is still nursing. This stage lasts about a year. In which the mother feeds them for two days then goes to feed for two days and switches back and forth.

Juvenile:

The period after weaning that they begin to learn to hunt on their own but are not considered mature yet. Stage is between the ages of 1 year old to 4 years old.

Adult:

They have two different levels of maturity, sexual which occurs at 4 to 5 years old and social maturity which occurs at 9 to 12 years. Social maturity is considered the point that males begin to develop a territory of their own and females leave to find a different territory.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They are carnivorous, feeding primarily on fish and the various denizens of the sea.

Behaviour

They are known as silent death by many sailors and would be adventurers. This name comes from the fact that despite their size they make little to no sound when they move. They also don't seem to communicate in any audible way, this makes them incredibly dangerous as they are very protective of their territories and one can easily stumble in without knowing.
