Tenets of Faith
- Learn all you can, and keep hidden that which you know. Reveal what pieces you must, but never the whole.
- Express and cultivate the evil within yourself, and in doing so, recognize it in others to exploit them for your own benefit.
- Seed the ruin of all who worship other deities, until only those who kneel before the Whispered One remain.

Personal history
Vecna was born in a small settlement in modern-day Northern Taria near the very end of the Third Age. He was barely a teenager when Emperor Gratianus's conquest of Lanora to form the Brekarian Empire began. Much of his settlement was ransacked in the conquest, and many of its inhabitants murdered. Vecna was one of a handful of survivors, hiding during much of the massacre after watching his own mother be cut down in front of him. He laid low after the massacre, integrating himself into early Brekarian society.
During his adult life, he discovered the arcane arts. He could not afford tuition at the Treassara Institute of the Arcane, so he had to slowly teach himself from a stolen spellbook. Eventually, he reached out to dark powers to grow stronger still, learning from them forbidden magics like necromancy. His grand ambition was immortality, and he aimed to replace the Brekarian Emperor and become eternal ruler of Geloriel. To unlock immortality, he first sought the secrets of lichdom. The dark powers indulged his requests, and he performed the ritual, sacrificing dozens of souls to power his phylactery. From there, he established a fortress in the Shadowfell to further his dark ambitions, aiming to one day return and complete his goals.
While in the Shadowfell, he uncovered shreds of the ritual used by the Raven Queen to ascend as a god herself. With his arcane aptitude, he worked tirelessly to complete the missing elements of the ritual. He knew that when the conditions were right in the Material Plane, he would return and become a god, forever to rule Geloriel. Until then, he gathered more of the components for the ritual.
Finally, when the conditions were right, he returned to the Material Plane, venturing to the city known now as Waylon's Gate, at the time the capital of the Brekarian Empire. In the center of the city, with all of the conditions aligned, he began the ritual of his ascension. However, he was not met with mere blind obedience. Prince Derick of Brekar, the second son of the current emperor and devout paladin of Pelor came to the defense of the city. During the battle, he was able to gouge out Vecna's left eye. As Vecna was finishing his ascension, Derick mustered enough energy for one final gambit.
To ensure Vecna's defeat, Pelor rewarded the prince's devotion and turned him into an aasimar. Derick was able to reach Vecna once again and make one final Banishing Smite, though only severing Vecna's left hand. Since that final wound was not fatal, Vecna's ascension succeeded, and he returned to the Shadowfell a god. Due to Pelor's enhancement of the smite, however, Vecna has not been able to return to the Material Plane, and has since been researching a way to bypass the Sun God's enchantment.
