Deepsquall

Deepsquall is a town located in the far northern reaches of the Drembari Isles. It is the only town on its island and is bisected by the Vulkcariid, an icy river that floods every year when the snows finally melt.

Culture

Squallers are a proud people--proud of their ability to survive in a harsh climate and the harmony they've created with the ever-changing Vulkcariid. Hard work is valued, as is helping those who require it.

History

For most, the appearance of Gnet is a time to rejoice, for prosperity and peace are surely on the way. For the people of Deepsquall, however, it is an ill omen, for it means that "Saint" Nikklash the Insatiable will make his way to their home, killing and destroying all in his path.
Nobody is quite sure why Nikklash is compelled to do this. Some myths hold that a great wrong was done unto him by the founders of Deepsquall and this is his eternal revenge. Others believe that Nikklash's unceasing appetite for ruination is tied to the cycle of Gnet itself. Still others posit that Nikklash is an avatar of Sothos and the annihilation he brings is part of a larger scheme.
What is certain, however, is that the onslaught lasts twelve days. No more. No less.

Military

To deal with the generational occurrence of Nikklash's Ride, the Squallsteady was formed in 901 AC. It is an elite organization with one singular purpose--to protect Deepsquall against the relentless attacks of the foul creatures beholden to Nikklash.

Agriculture & Industry

Much has been made of the Salkeel fish that come rushing through the Vulkcariid every thaw. The Squallers catch these fish by the boatload, sending them south to various trading ports where they are prized for their soft, pleasantly salty flesh. The skins of the fish also dried and used to make a variety of clothing and leather-like material. The bones and innards of the fish make particularly good fertilizer for the late thaw crop of Ice Barley.
Salkeel Barley Wine is considered a local delicacy.
