Evander

Evander Albionus Vernicus

Evander was born Evander Vernicus to the prestigious Vernicus family. His father Polipsis⁣ was a respected senator and was slated to become consul in the future as he had distinguished himself in the senate. Vernica during this time was in the process of formalizing Luclana as a proper province and this process was being lead by Polipsis⁣. As a young boy Evander had a penchant for combat and distinguished himself as an excellent fighter. He was also very pious and dedicated himself to the god of order Abadar, the patron god of Vernica. As he grew older he learned the trades of war and drilled as a commander in the legions. Most of the fighting for the first millennia was against local tribes of orcs in the forest and plains in the east. The tribes were numerous compared to the freshly formed Sovern Republic and fighting them was exceedingly tedious as they had to be sure to only provoke a handful of tribes at a time or risk a massive invasion into their lands. There was barely any glory to be had in these fights as most legates and consuls took extreme caution and made incremental advances into these territories. Often there would only be a single tribe killed every consulship, and oftentimes the tribes popped back up that quickly.
During the life of Evander the tribes in the plains of Luclana had been for the most part pushed back to the forests and colonists had begun to inhabit the area. Evander became second in command to the legates in charge of keeping the area clear of orcs and gained valuable information fighting numerically superior forces. He distinguished himself to his legate and the troops and one day when the legate was off on other business during an orc assault the troops looked to him to command them. They were outnumbered as usual, but Evander managed to find excellent ground to defend and weathered the assault until the orcs tired themselves out and left leaving the Republic with few casualties.
Polipsis⁣ was elected consul and in the same year had Evander placed in charge of the legions attacking Albion. Evander was only 27 at this time, exceedingly young for a legateship of that size. Many in the senate doubted this appointed, but this was soon assuaged when Evander managed to secure three major victories over Albion in the first year of fighting. Evander secured a peace deal from Albion securing a large swath of territory for the newly formed province of Luclana. Polipsis then reassigned Evander to fight with Solden in beating back Those of Gaulren leading to the events of the The First Republican Civil War⁣
