Cobalt Town

"Cobalt Town, a small southside neighborhood existing mostly on the eastern edge of Rust Road, was famously called the Three-Time Loser by the folk singer Olga Pine. In her ballad Blue Bolts, Pine sang of three great thunderstorms that destroyed a little village called Blueville. The first thunderstorm tore up the ground and revealed a treasure trove, which attracted a horde of bandits in fur coats and crowns. The bandits enslaved all the villagers and forced them to dig up and count and catalog all the treasure. The second thunderstorm set the treasure on fire, and half the villagers died putting out the flames, while the survivors were whipped and beaten and sometimes killed by the bandits for not saving enough of the wealth. So the surviving villagers banded together and rose up against the slavers. But then the third thunderstorm came and struck all the villagers, killing them and saving the bandits. The song was deliberately vague on where the storms came from, what they were, or what they wanted.   "By the end of the First Tech Boom, there was no more cobalt in Cobalt Town. The ores had been instrumental in the research that led to the development of modern glasso-plastique, used in riot gear and military hardware; the same military hardware that was now used to extract cobalt from Neruseru, Drughal, and one or two other Tribal Nations somewhere in central Gaia."
