Background Information

With the rise of the chronological shifts occuring throughout the continents due to the Fragmentation (all continents experiencing drastically different time zones ranging from 1mya to the 2400's) we have previously only seen grave losses. We have experienced phenomena both regional and worldwide, with effects as small as closing and shifting caves all the way to the loss of entire generations of civilizations.

Scientific Background and Ongoing Research

Recent discoveries have found that caves nearby to large metropolitan centers (remote caves are hypothesized to have this effect as well but are far more difficult to safely study) are able to attenuate and magnify energy from lost peoples and creatures. To better understand how these effects work, Solaris, City of Elemental Magic, has sent multiple parties of adventurers and scientists to these caves.

It was found that the way this energy source operates is in harnessing the loss in mass of the disseapearing living things. This lost mass (also known as the 'Mass Loss Effect') experiences extreme accelerative affects which cause a the mass to stretch beyond the event horizon (similar to the process occuring near black holes, which is why we use this term) and convert into pure potential energy.

We are not entirely sure why this affect is strongest in caves, but we hypothesize that this affect works best within 'pockets' of natural material, by this we mean that these affects may attenuate most in enclosed areas of natural materials. In the case of caves, this is rock. We believe that this affect is most pronounced in caves due to the relative natural material 'pocket' size. There is ongoing research regarding 'Pocket Theory' by multiple organizations.

Harnessing this Energy

The process to harnessing this energy has proven to be far more straight-forward than the process to understanding how the caves work. In order to harness the energy, the cave needs to be opened and the 'Power Harness' machine is set up by technicians, after which the cave is sealed one more, taking care to only use natural materials. The 'Power Harness' works as a capacitor. One end of the harness is hooked up to the top of the cave, and the other to the bottom. It's a bit more complicated than that but the basic principle remains the same. These two ends extend into large plates that fill the cave, and as the cave attenuates the energy, these plates charge through the potential between them. This charge is then off-loaded into a special battery that has been designed to handle high electrical impulses. The result: clean, emmisionles energy that many consider to be renewable, powering cities and villages alike.

Ethics

Some debate the ethics of using the death of living beings, including intelligent species in the creation of energy, citing there is very little difference in this source of energy as compared to 'Dinosaur Liquifaction' (a process where dinosaurs are liquified across millions of years and then the resulting 'Energy Goop' is harvested) when it comes to renewability.

There is also further debate as to whether this process dis-incentivizes local and world governments from finding solutions to the Shifts which have caused significant fatalities, especially in poorer regions of the world. Still, these opinions do not seem to make the majority of public perception of this new technology.

This material has not been sufficiently studied to determine possible compounds as it is very challenging to harness in lab settings with our current technology.

Geology & Geography

This material can be found in various caves throughout the world, but is hypothesized to be reproduceable in laboratory settings through the creation of a hollow natural pocket of material.

Origin & Source

No one knows fully the origin of this form of energy, we only know that is started to appear along the same time as the Shifts and appears to be tied to the 'Mass Loss' of living creatures dissapearing or perishing due to changing timelines. This is mysterious, however, as there is one location (Atlantis) that does not appear to experience the Shifts but is still able to harness the Displacement.

Life & Expiration

We are considering the deterioration of this material to be it's corrosive affect on our current battery technologies. No one is quite sure why this corosion occurs.

Law & Regulation

There are currently very few laws on the Displacement due to its relative newness in discovery. However, the only legal restrictions currently involve harvesting only by licensed workers and due to extreme flammability and explosivity, this material can not be retained in elemental form by anyone other than professional researchers specializing in the subject.
