Basic Information

Anatomy

Pinwings have tapered flipper-like wings with two separated phalanges at the end which can align with the rest of the flipper for smooth swimming. Their feet are webbed, thick, and tough with taloned toes. Their bodies are mostly covered in tiny feathers, allowing smooth movement through the water. Their tongues and the inside of their mouths have tiny spines that allow them to hold on to slick prey while underwater.

Genetics and Reproduction

Pinwings are egglayers who nest on coastal areas of islands. The male incubates and protects the eggs while the female fishes.

Ecology and Habitats

Pinwings live on and around the islands north of the southern pole and south of The Triplets: Ora, Ern and Heeda (Suvi Islands).

Dietary Needs and Habits

Carnivorous, preferring fish and shellfish.

Additional Information

Social Structure

Generally, males are caregivers and females are hunters. They have close-knit communities, and pairs mate for life.

Domestication

The Suvi attempted to domesticate a flock of pinwings a little south of Heeda, but found them to be insular, defensive and organized. Pinwings were deemed too intelligent to domesticate.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Pinwings inhabit islands south of the equator and north of the southern pole. They swim and fish mostly on the continental shelf. They fear larger predators in the deep ocean.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Sight, hearing, taste, touch, smell, rarely magical sense and ability.

Civilization and Culture

Naming Traditions

Names often begin with Ca, Cre, Ia, Qru, Ria, Skree or Zri. Names often end in w, wk, ok, sat, or oo. They are one to three syllables long. They translate to descriptions of the individual, such as Playful, Loud Mouth, Tapper, or Soother. Pinwings give nicknames to members of other species.

Beauty Ideals

Smooth feathers and a clear, distinctive voice.

Courtship Ideals

The young male picks out a nesting site before he attempts to attract an unattached female. Females choose mates based on nesting, appearance, voice, and demeanor.

Average Technological Level

They can create stone-age tools, but prefer to trade for more advanced tools when available.

Major Language Groups and Dialects

Languages they understand include their own (Pinwing,) seabird dialects and Aquan. They can learn to understand other languages but have difficulty pronouncing many sounds.

Common Etiquette Rules

Pinwings call out to each other, bob heads, then nuzzle when they meet.

Common Dress Code

Only fastenings to carry needed tools, valuables, or ballast are permittable. Clothing restricts movement and creates overheating.

Common Taboos

Cannibalism, incest, pedophilia, the murder of a member of their species unless sick or lame, and suicide.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Pinwings see other races as predators, prey, or competitors for land and resources. Pinwings are insular and rarely seek out the company of other species unless they have lost their mate or been pushed out of their flock. They never have children with other species.
