Giullis Lorafir

A Troubled Youth

Giullis Lorafir is a Wood Elf, born to a lower cast farming family in the town of The Ruins i·Wenyn Falls.   He was a child of great ambition and extreme cunning but due to his standing in life, and that of his family, his ambition generally was met with little or no success. His parents were comfortable with their lot in life but, like any young Elf, Giullis wanted adventure, fame, fortune and to prove himself equal to, or even, better than his peers.   He studied more, trained harder, and even joined the local militia to prove that he, a farmer’s son, could be something more than what his birth and the restrictive cast system of his land had dictated for him.   It was true that members of his community had done just that and now they were famed warriors in their own right, but they were exceptions that proved the rule and as much as newer laws had come to encourage such things, local elders, and therefore the communities, fought against such changes and in a lot of cases just ignored them.   Giullis, therefore, was already fighting an uphill battle from day one, and as much as he showed great talent, every setback, every failure, every injustice just jaded him. Setbacks were meant to make you stronger but for him, it just hastened his fall deeper into a pit of resentment and hatred for his town and his "backward people."   People of lesser ability but higher cast would be promoted above him, or given priority position within the Rangers Guild and Giullis would just be left mucking out the horses, providing food for the commanders and even left in charge of the militia ration stores. Important enough jobs to make sure you had a well-oiled machine ready to answer the call of the High Queen Amrila I, but for him it was another kick in the teeth and a reminder of where he had come from.   Having had enough and having resolved to end his torment and dishonour once and for all, Giullis slipped some Alfusis Oil into the town Sentry’s evening mead, waited for them to sleep then stood atop of the i·Wenyn falls prepared to throw himself off.

A Friend

Standing on the precipice of the Falls, Giullis looked over the tranquil light of his town and saw nothing but rot, social division and a world he didn't want to be a part of anymore. He cursed his people, cursed his luck and dammed the Gods for fating him with such a life, he then closed his eyes and took a step forward....   Nearly instantly he was yanked backward with great force and ended up prostrated on the ground. It must have been one of the sentries he thought, damned if he had not given them enough of that sap. Looking up, tears in his eyes and curses on his tongue he saw a young Elf looking back at him. Not a sentry, not militia but someone else; Rinn Eldan   Rinn belonged to the Eldan Family ( Eldan Family Tree ) and was the Twin brother of Raell Eldan Aka Tharivol Eldan. Rinn and Raell were very similar in many ways but whereas Raell was most definitely a fighter, Rinn was a lover and wore his heart on his sleeve. He, therefore cared a lot about his family, his land, and even the peoples, irrespective of cast within it and would spend many hours talking to casts, others in his community would have deemed below him. Giullis thought himself tough and not the sentimental type but found it hard not to be warmed by Rinn's kindness and belief.   Rinn gave Giullis a chance at being what he wanted to be and spoke on his behalf to his father Athalon Eldan who, for his son, gave Giullis a chance to prove what he could do.   The Eldan family were indeed a warrior cast, an ancient one at that and one you would not expect to fraternise with meer farmers. But their history was a long and complicated one. They fought not just for Iyathlia but for all of Freiya and more importantly were self-proclaimed protectors of The Portal of Aberath; something that had lead to serious tension with King Erendriel during The Portal War 1095 - 1100 IME. In exchange for fielty to the king and to the land the Eldan's had been given a quasi autonomy from the King's rule (now the Queen's) and within this autonomy, Giullis found a freedom he had never been given before.   The trials were hard but he came out the other side with distinction. So much so that in his mind Athalon would have no option but to give him a position as a Ranger; unfortunately his preconceptions were not the reality of the situation.
Despite being begged by Rinn to let Giullis become a Ranger, Athalon refused. All new recruits, irrespective of rank, family, or bond started at the bottom and worked their way up. Merit was the main tenet to their creed and there were no exceptions, irrespective of how exceptional a neophyte was. Giullis was therefore given the rank of Auxiliary Scout, something Rinn told him would only be for a short while and that he would soon be a Ranger like them.   To most, this would have been accepted as part and parcel of training but for Giullis, it was another slight in a long list of slights throughout his life. He was as good as the rest of them, nay, he was better. The only reason he is not a Ranger is because of his cast and his family, nothing else.

Bowing to Athalon, Giullis, kept his resentment and anger locked inside. Now was not the time he told himself and begrudgingly accepted the broach given to him.   "Soon my friend." Rinn said tapping him on the should, knowing his disappointment. "Is'nt that right brother " Rinn turned to his twin brother Raell.   "If he trains hard and proves himself then I don't see why not in a few years."   Giullis, crushed and frustrated, muster up a nod and a smile, then left the room to be on his own. Rinn went to go after him but was stopped by Raell.   "Leave him brother, it is the way of things."
