The Portal War 1095 - 1100 IME
Freiya has never been a land of tranquility, well at least as far back as history tells it and therefore its pages are littered with wars over land, rights, a new alliance formed to perpetuate an old grudge and even the persecution of a new race coming through the portal. But these were all generally small scale in the grand scheme of things, a couple of nations fighting each other, resulting in the ceding of some territory or the swearing of a new oath.
It was though, in 1095 IME that the kingdoms of Kyrila and Iyathlia, both believing in their divine right to controlThe Portal of Aberath started a war that lead to the most destructive confrontation Freiya had ever seen until the coming of the Corruption.
In the space of 5 years the 2 Super Powers and their proxies fought a bloody war of attrition, filled with alliances, counter alliances, espionage, and assassination. Cities burned, millions died, deals were done with forces beyond comprehension and horrific crimes were committed in the name of expediency. A new race, the Warforged, were even created to drive the war to ever greater heights, culminating in The Battle of Aberath Plain 25/03/1099and the near destruction of the very Portal both side coveted so much.
If not for the actions of two mercenary captains and their men protecting the Runic crystals surrounding its base, the Portal’s magical link to the outer lands (and the streams that fill the world’s lakes and oceans) would have been lost forever.
At the culmination of the battle, an Arch Druid called Sal-Durah Jin stood on the Portal’s Altar and, with all the power he could muster, divining as much as he could from the remaining crystals at his feet, he transformed himself into a titanic Prismatic Dragon.
With a boom of psionic power, the opposing forces were knocked to their knees and the battle halted... Or so the legend says. Sal-Durah Jin placed an image in the minds of all present, one of darkness, death and the destruction of all they held dear. Showing them clearly that with the division in the land, and the loss of the portal, a great evil would overwhelm all. Unity was, and remains, the only way to prevent the coming darkness.
