Miklagard Settlement in Freelands | World Anvil

Miklagard

Miklagard is the capital of Miklareya herað, and the only settlement there large enough to qualify as a city. With only a sprinkling of humans, making up an almost negligible portion of the overall population, it is predominantly home to Giants. The only deep-water port on the island, this is where children suffering from giantism from all over Auregelmir and the continent of Crownmark set foot for the first time after being sent away from home. For most of them, Miklagard will be their new home.

The city is home to Jarl Lifa of Miklareya, a native-born giant who rules the island herað from here. Together with her son, Grutle Lifasón, they run the only facility in the world that can provide properly trained giant soldiers, to the great benefit of the Auregelmir military.

Despite its focus on training soldiers, Miklagard is not solely a military center. It also serves as a hub for culture and commerce. The city's vibrant port attract merchants from all over the country, fostering trade and exchange of goods. A major resource sold here is of stone from the many outlying quarries. To forego the need for cranes and carts, giants usually accompany these stones to their destination, adding labor to the list of popular exports.

The architectural landscape of the city is dominated by dark stone buildings with gabled slate roofing. These buildings can be both rectangular or circular. Most floors are dug in to accommodate the height of the giants. Very few houses have more than one floor, as the material cost for supporting the giants' weights on an upper floor would be substantial. Beyond the rafters, wood is used sparingly. To the aure, the older a tree gets, the more sacred it is, and the trees needed to build the houses of giants would have to be very old.
