Mechanics & Inner Workings

Tocapu

Tocapu are the decorative signifiers patterned into discrete and repeating geometrical motifs that identify the various quadrants, provinces and towns.   Qompi requires a specialized and state-run body of dedicated workers to create elaborate and richly decorated textiles: the chosen women (aklla) and the qompi-kamayok (full-time male weavers).

Significance

They are of such exceptionally high quality, and represent such wealth, that it is a crime for a commoner to handle them: often resulting in an immediate death sentence if caught.   By contrast, they are the preferred medium of exchange among the higher nobility. Cumpi similarly serve as a political device to show well-meaning and mannered intentions.
