Seventh Seat Robert Alan Young (a.k.a. The Orphaned Hunter)
Robert Alan Young (1990 - Present) better known as The Orphaned Hunter, is a highly competent freelance mercenary. Though not himself anomalous, Young is extensively trained in both close-quarters combat and dealing with paranormal threats. As such, he has a reputation for surviving contracts that should reasonably kill a human-even when such a result is his employer’s intention.
In more recent years, he was a founding member of the Red Ash Company, a small mercenary company he formed with fellow mercenaries 'Grey' (Alessandro) DeMarco and Tamara Nakano. As of 2016, he is in a relationship with Horizon Initiative agent Julia Cutter, and serving as the Seventh Seat on the Mercenaries Guild Council.
Physical Description
Tends to keep in good physical condition by a combination of regular training and sudden, unexpected running; albeit fairly heavily scarred and prone to entertaining bad habits. Largely dark features, especially his eyes, and tan skin. Notable features include a scar running the length of his face, hooking from his right cheekbone to the rear of his mandible on the same side.
Angular nose. Dark eyes. Predominantly slim face. His signature feature, a prominent white knife scar, arks from the bridge of his nose to the rear of his jaw. on the right-hand side of his face.
When in plainclothes, Young is usually found in shades of grey, dark blue, or black. Frequently paired with a hooded sweaters or jacket, or a baseball cap to wear low over his face. Sometimes uses an expensive concealer to dampen the obviousness of his facial scar when in public or on formal occasions. His concealed weapon of choice is a Glock 19, and he likewise often carries his Bladewood karambit concealed on his person even when not in the field.
When working in the field or otherwise in acceptable company, Young typically wears a set of adapted combat armour, and a ballistic mask with maroon markings evocative of a stylized skull. He also usually has his signature M4A1 with one of its multitude of upper receivers, and either his Glock 19 in 9mm, or his Glock 20 in 10mm, sometimes rechambered for .45 ACP. Also in possession of a karambit fighting knife forged from the leaves of the Bladewood tree, either stolen from or gifted by Tamara Nakano (depending on when the story is being retold).
Mental characteristics
In 1989, Anne Young, a young mercenary, came into contact with a slightly older but charming Polish Foundation agent called Alan Kowalczyk. They quickly fell in love, but kept their affair a secret from their respective organizations. Robert Young was born on June 21, 1990. For a few years the family was happy, and Anne became pregnant with a second child.
However, in February 1994, a few months before the new baby was due, Alan disappeared without a trace. Six months pregnant, Anne was unable to search for him. She gave birth to Robert's sister, Elizabeth, on May 24 of the same year. When it became apparent Alan wouldn't return, she began moving with her two children around North America, and returned to mercenary work without the knowledge of her two young children.
In the ensuing years, Robert found himself dually frustrated with his mother's constant moving of the family and his frequent role watching Elizabeth; though four years her senior, he was ill-equipped to be a surrogate parental figure, especially early on. This, combined with Anne's constant secrecy bred a great deal of resentment between the two. Almost as soon as he was old enough Robert moved out of the house, attending a BA Psychology program in another city.
Young's education would be short-lived, however. Less than a month before he was to attend his second year, Anne asked that he watch over his sister, Elizabeth, while she was away working. Following a fight, he agreed to help her on the condition that she tell him what her secret career was and why it kept her moving constantly. When Anne didn't turn up as expected, Young broke into her personal safe and discovered her weapons, journal, and the Mask of the Orphaned Hunter. This incident spiralled into a desperate search to try to find Anne Young, which led Robert and Elizabeth to the Tavern on the Edge of Reality and Daniel Mason, a mercenary who had once worked alongside her.
Following in his mother's footsteps, Robert became Mason's apprentice, aiming to become a mercenary himself in order to support his sister's education and protect her from whoever or whatever had seemingly wiped Anne Young from the face of the earth. This would lead to tension between the siblings, however, as Elizabeth despised the immorality of mercenary work and resented that it was what was enabling her own career. Nonetheless, Robert persisted, learning a great deal during his early apprenticeship but getting no closer to determining the fate of their mother.
In 2013, Robert received his signature facial scar in an early encounter with Tamara Nakano, and by the end of the year he would be named as Daniel Mason's Second in his duel for the position of First Mercenary. Following the duel (and Robert saving Mason's life from an illicit assassination attempt by the loser), Mason formally declared Robert Young a Freelancer in his own right, and the successor to his mother as the Orphaned Hunter.
Through much of his early career, Robert would work for MC&D Ltd.
Heterosexual, but rarely in a relationship for long.
High school education. Apprenticed with another mercenary, Daniel Mason from September 8, 2009 until August 24, 2013. Extensively trained in the use of rifles, handguns, and submachine guns.
Began his career at 19 as the apprentice of Daniel Mason (the Grey Wolf). As of turning 23, he became an independent mercenary, taking on the infamous title of The Orphaned Hunter.
Robert originally had a strong sense of right and wrong. However, his exposure to the darkest depths behind the Veil, and the horrific actions taken by even those who kept the world in existence, shook all his beliefs. The realization that morality was meaningless when being moral would lead to oblivion caused him to develop a dark view of the world, fuelled by individualistic nihilism.
