Low Town

Low Town is the area of the capital where the farms to produce food for the city are located. This region was established to ensure that any posible attacker could not just wait for the city to run out of food in the case that the barriers need to be used. As such, it comprised a good portion of the capital area south of the river, And it is divided in three main areas:
  • The first and bigger one, around three quarters of the total size of the distric, is the city farms which are areas belonging officially to the city. In practice, even when some of this areas belong to the crown, the mayority belongs to different noble families, which take the profit for the labour.
  • There are several crops which are grown in this areas, following an schedule designed to allow the areas to continue to produce as much food as possible, for as long as posible, witout loosing soil quality. Since the amount of space is limited, if the soil degrade, this could spell doom for the city in case of an unexpected attack. The main crops cultivated in the area, are rice, near the river, where the water can be diverted into creating paddy fields for the rice to grow optimally. Farther from the river, other staple cereals are grown, like wheat, corn, soybeans and cassava predominantly. Other smaller crop are grown either for the benificial values for the soil or to ensure a complete range of staple food could be given to city population in times of crisis. This space is mostly worked by slaves or indebted workers, only the higher positions of handlers are salaried. Since the people of Spiralai don't like to talk or in some cases even look at slaves. Indebted workers normally take intermediate handler positions, between the actual handlers, which relied their orders to them and the slaves. - The second area, which comprised of half of the remaining quarter,is considered more private. This area is divided in small parcels of land, each belonging to a different family or collective, which completly own them. This has normally been granted due to small families due to services to the crown, in any fields, but it is mostly for military honors. The owner are free to do what they wish with their land, but they are expected to pay some of their produce as contribution to the city food storage. This people are not normally of high status or high nobility. The members of high families which reach this level of recognition, normally get land out of the city. Only those from lower nobility or no nobility at all are given this lands as regards. They are still considered one of the higher regards for low ranking people in the city. Some of this fields, are worked by the collectives who own them, but there are a few which are also worked by slaves. Unless the family who own the farm has been disgraced or lost all of their other assets, they would not live in the farm themselves, but in the nearby fisher district. -The third area, is comprised of building and infrastructure needed to either host the slaves or to process the different harvested produce into staple food which can be stored to be used in case of emergency. Even when the food produced in this land, is as fresh as it can be. It is normally consumed by the middle and lower clases of society. Anyone with enough money and/or power to do so, would prefer food produced outside of the city.
