AoA.1.5 The Heathen

Session Preface:

As the green crystalline sphere begins to dissipate, the red fiery eyes of the devilsh monstrosity watch you menacingly, filled with rage and insatiable bloodlust. Its entire form seems made of bone with a thin layer of taut skin stretched over, stitching the form together. Its hands, massive and clawed, wrap around a massive polearm as its barbed tail sways slowly to and fro behind it. The massive creature stands statuesque for the moment as the faint smell of soot and of burning flesh permeate throughout the room.   Next to the towering monster, its dragonborn bastard child turns, smirking in your direction. His dark red robes with golden inscriptions contrast sharply against the dark blue scales of his prominently burned and blistered face. As you look closely, you can see faint traces of your family heritage, the shape of his nose and the color of his eyes match that of your father's, but his appearance is equally unfamiliar with its devilish influence. His ears jut out like jagged cliffs, and the horns atop his head protrude like a bent and twisted crown. Deep scars crisscross on his forehead, one dragged all the way down to his left eye. His shrunken wings pierce his cloak and share the same sharp and bony structure as his father next to him.   "Now, I have no reason to wish you ill will nor harm, nephews. But I warrant the same can not be said of you about me, else why would you trek across the valley to stand here now? So say your piece, whether with steel, spell, or speech. Choose wisely, lest Bahamut welcome those faithful among you prematurely. What shall it be?"

Session Summary:

In the shadow of Telzuun's massive bone devil father, the party exchange words and seek answers from Telzuun before the negotiations devolve into inevitable combat. Telzuun divulges the Seventh Prophet has been transported to Waterdeep where she is being looked after and allowed to learn and grow and become whoever or whatever she wishes, rather than living under the pressure of Avraathe's expectations of her. He also explains his actions as a necessary catalyst of chaos which will allow Avraathe's disenfranchised a chance to pursue freedom they have been denied. The party then engages Telzuun in combat to bring justice for the murders he has committed with the hopes of subduing him and learning more behind his schemes.   The encounter quickly gets out of hand with the bone devil conjuring another series of spined devils and quickly weakening Parathrax to the point of near unconsciousness. Using powerful metamagics, Telzuun weakens the party and devestates the small chamber with fireballs and other spells while preventing his father from taking the worst of the effects. As Telzuun blinks between the material plane and the ethereal plane, the devils continue to frustrate and weaken the party. Eventually, the party cleaves through the horde of devils and bring down Telzuun's towering father, leaving only the sorcerer to defeat. In a moment of desperation, Telzuun's final fireball spell manages to knock out Parathrax, Vorothruun, and Beldan in one fell swoop. Caught between healing his companions and possibly defeating Telzuun, Endriel draws a pair of arrows and fires through Telzuun's skull at point blank range, offering the guidance of the Platinum Dragon in the process.   After a moment of recovery, the party explores the tower, discovering a series of documents, payment for Telzuun's role in the recent events, as well as a series of potions and five unique gems with veins of platinum woven throughout the precious stones. The party then decides it best to burn down the tower so as to remove any chance for whoever hired Telzuun to have proof of how the encounter unfolded or what documents the party recovered from the aftermath.   On their way back to Avraathe, the party discusses in detail how events might have unfolded in their absence and make plans for how to address their own accomplishments to both the general public and the individuals in power like High Priest Porath, noting the two separate games they must play if they are to win over and save Avraathe from whatever corruption is spreading through the city. As they near the city, Endriel pauses for a moment to visit his homestead, discovering a series of reports from his Harps, which he addresses with the party as they continue their scheming and preparation.
