Nyima

Assassin Sey-Sutay Nyima

Once upon a time in the village of Kiraan, there lived a woman named Nyima. She was the Assassin of the village, and watched over her people with care and love. She and her husband tried for many years to have children, and eventually, they had a single son. Tragically, only a year after the birth of Atyef, her husband died of illness. Atyef became everything to her.   As he grew, Atyef became beloved throughout the village. He was mild-mannered, skilled with a boomerang, handsome, and strong. Once he reached adolescence all the young women in town had their eye on him. Nyima, however, was worried.   Nyima saw a darkness in her son that he hid from the rest of the village. Having raised him since birth, she recognized when his behaviour was genuine and when he was acting. She did her best with him. She brought him to church every week and over time, the majority of her sermons became directed exclusively at him, extolling the virtues of harmony, compassion, and love. It never seemed to stick. Something inside her son was broken, and there was nothing she could do about it.   Despite it all, Nyima love her son. Though his actions were calculated, they did bring people joy. He was deeply selfish, but acted otherwise to win people's affection. Nyima told herself that if his actions were noble, then perhaps his intentions did not matter.   The situation worsened when he reached adulthood. The chief of the village appointed him the leader of the militia, to nobody's surprise. From then on, Atyef exerted more and more influence on the aging chief. He began training the members of the militia with more organization, "for practice". He was gaining power, and Nyima was scared.   Then Atyef began talking about uniting the villages along the Adoneekug river. They could all be more powerful if they worked together, he promised. His charisma sold it to the villagers of Kiraan - all except his mother. While he spoke of Uyoyanist values like harmony, cooperation, and unity, she knew that in his heart he desired no such thing. A kingdom brought together by Atyef would not be a union of villages working for a common goal, it would be a tyranny with Atyef at the head. The hunger for power she'd helplessly watched grow in him all his life would never be satisfied, and they would enter an era of conquest, oppression, and suffering. Atyef had to be stopped.   As an Assassin of the Uyoyanist church, she knew what had to be done. But, she could not. Despite everything, she still loved her son. He was her reminder of her husband, the infant she'd cradled in her arms. She dared not speak of this with anyone else in the village, who saw in him only what Atyef wanted them to see, so she walked deep into the heart of the Nguk Forest to meditate.   For three days, she sat in the forest in deep thought. She weighed every possibility, contemplated every teaching she held dear, and came to only one conclusion: to ensure the lives and freedom of everybody else, she would have to assassinate her son.   She returned to Kiraan in the evening of the third day and cooked a large meal to share with her son. She included all of his favourite foods, and every time he tried to go to bed, she insisted he stay just a little longer, to humour his old mother with conversation. The next day, she asked him to go for a walk with her in the forest. Resigned to humouring her, he agreed.   When they were far from Kiraan with only the trees for company, she asked him to sit and share lunch with her. She gave him a meat pastry, and then sat in prayer as Atyef slowly realized the food had been poisoned. After he slumped to the ground, she held him in her arms and hummed an old lullaby until he died. Nyima buried his body in the forest, and then hanged herself nearby.   Villagers, curious about the missing pair, searched the forest the next day and found the scene. They cried in dismay at the betrayal of their beloved Assassin and the loss of their golden child. For many years, Nyima was a despised figure in Kiraan. Only a few decades ago, the Assassin of Kiraan found a clay tablet on which Nyima had outlined her motivations and begged Ban Kekuma for understanding, hidden within the church. It took a long time for the perception of her to adjust, and she is still a controversial figure in the Kiraan area.
