Kaoreng

Yen Kullan Kaoreng-pang

The suffix 'Pang' is a royal title meaning 'queen', but her subjects had another name for her. They called her Kaorang Paungan, meaning "Kaoreng of Blood".

The nickname was well earned. She was the last in a long line of cruel, power-hungry monarchs that abused both their political power and their spiritual power. She was a gifted spirit shifter and used this power to toy with others from a young age. As a young girl, she became addicted to tasting others' emotions and what she found especially intoxicating was fear.

Feeling feeling the fear and shock without being physically in danger or pain gave her a rush like nothing else. As a teenager, she was caught keeping a cage of starving rats in her room so she could partake in their panic and pain as they ate each other alive. Her father took the rats away and punished the servants who hadn't watched over her closely enough.

The situation worsened when she became queen herself. The dungeons of the palace were never empty. Kaoreng cracked down on any tiny crime to bring herself more subjects. She had victims tortured just to sit in the room and taste their fear. She fed on others' energy, shifted anxiety into others for her own amusement, and pushed any of her own uncomfortable feelings like guilt, grief, or loneliness onto others.

On top of her supernatural abuses, she continued her family's long tradition of squeezing taxes out of the poor, funnelling any ounce of wealth into their palace, and executing anyone who spoke out against the throne. One of the most unpopular programs, began by her father, was the work distribution plan that took young people 14 and over and sent them to other parts of the kingdom to work in construction or agriculture, or to work as servants in the palace. The public purpose of this was to ensure all corners of the kingdom had an equal workforce and employment. In practice, it was intended to break up friends and families to keep dissident groups from gaining traction and to keep the children of rural workers hostage at the palace to dissuade rebellion.

Kaoreg was eventually brought down by such a rebellion 15 years into her reign.
