Creepy Hands

Ocean, just like land, is home to many different and interesting creatures. And as you move away from the coasts of Ä+*4~ and T@Ö#Ä3, these creatures will gradually change from interesting, to straight up terrifying. When you get far enough from the land, the bottom of the Ocean will completely disappear and you’ll be alone in the water that leads all the way down where it eventually turns into the surface of the Ocean on the other side. Because of this unlimited vastness of the Ocean it’s no surprise that this part of it is home to possibly the largest creature of our world.

What is it?

This creature is simply named creepy hands, which is because its hands are the only part of this creature that people have seen for sure. If you sail out to the Ocean far enough, you’ll probably see these hands reaching out of the sea, often trying to grab anything on the surface. And if you sail into their path, they’ll very likely grab your ship too, and drag it down into the mysterious depths of the Ocean. This is one of the main reasons why the creature is so poorly researched, as any explorers willing to sail that far out and get close to the creature, would, and have met a tragic fate at the hands of this terrifying creature.

There are some things we do know about it though. The most obvious one is that this is a really big creature. A huge one, some might even say colossal. Considering even its hands are big enough to grab any average sized ships and drag them under the surface is proof enough of the creature’s immense size.

Second thing you’ll hopefully realize in time is that the creature’s colors closely resemble those of the Ocean. Not every creature is the exact same color, but all of them seem to be on the scale of blue and green hues. This makes them harder to spot from the surface, and it makes it easier for the creature to grab any unsuspecting ships or other creatures that live closer to the surface. Beyond these two details, there isn’t really much else we know for sure, but we can speculate. And moles sure do like to speculate.

What are the Theories?

There are different theories on what this creature could actually be, but the one now most widely accepted is that the creepy hands actually belong to a type of a giant squid.

After researching the preserved data of the old world, many similarities can be found between the creepy hand and ancient squids. Some of these include living in the ocean, having tentacles, two of which would usually be longer and evolved to better grab stuff, and, there have been reports of these creatures being able to grow to exceptionally large sizes. They were also considered to be one of the more intelligent animals of the ancient world, so it wouldn’t be surprising for them to be smart enough to find a way to survive the apocalypse.

What is more, many ancient stories report giant squids that would do exactly what the creepy hands do today - grab ships and drag them below the surface. One of the best known cases of such a colossal ship destroying squid was called Kraken, and the reports of it appeared in different parts of the ancient world. With such a sea creature already being confirmed in the ancient world, it only makes sense that creepy hands are also just that.

Other Theories

However, not all people are convinced about the squid theory. These are mostly people who aren’t satisfied with the explanation that such a mythical creature could be just a regular squid, and explain it in some of the most bizzare ways.

One of these is belief that they are a type of a sea homunculus. While their existence hasn’t even been confirmed, they are usually depicted with disproportionately long arms and large hands. Some also believe homunculi to be a more malevolent species, and more likely to want to harm ships sailing into their territory.

Another similar theory speculates that the hands don’t belong to a homunculus, but mermaids, which themselves are another subspecies of modern people that hasn’t yet been confirmed to exist. Another theory even suggests that there is no creature at all, but that creepy hands are really just a pair of hands connected with soft tissue floating around the Ocean. This one is really hard to believe and the silliest one, but also somehow the most terrifying one.

This may seem absurd sounding and illogical now, but in the past people had to consider even the most absurd theories and rule them out to come up with something that would make actual sense. And who knows, maybe the squid theory is the one that’s wrong, and there really are just random arms floating through the sea.

What does it do?

Now of course, people are also curious about why exactly does this creature exist in the first place. Well, there’s no particular reason why any creature or animal should exist, but in the case of creepy hands this might make sense.

As some of the historians have noticed in some of the really ancient maps, strange and terrifying creatures like this were often depicted on the edge of the maps. That is believed to be a warning for sailors to not sail that far out, because of the dangers you may run into there. One of these dangers would, of course, be these creatures, but there is another, possibly even worse danger. What people back then were already very well aware of, and people today know it all too well too, is the fact that way out there is in fact an edge of the world. If you were to sail all the way there, you would probably just fall off the edge into the void. Or maybe you’d just continue on around to the other side until you come to T@Ö#Ä3. Or maybe your entire ship would keep falling until you fall back into the sea right where you fell off, kinda like how End of the World works. In any case, the fact is that we don’t know what would happen, but it surely wouldn’t be good. This is why these creatures are guarding the end of the world, scaring away any ships that would dare to sail that far out. Well, it's either that, but if you don’t let them scare you away, they’ll just drag you down into the Ocean.

That’s another mystery about these things - no one knows what exactly happens if they do drag you down. There are very few reports of such a thing happening to anyone, for many reasons. Firstly, no one actually dares to go there and anger the creepy hands, and even if they do, they’ll be snatched by the creepy hands, never to be seen again. Also there is no actual proof of that happening to any ships. Because of this, people are again left to only guess and speculate. Some people believe that the creature below will eat the ship and its crew, others think the creature will just destroy the ship and let people on it to die, and some are convinced the hands will drag you down to the other side of the world, and let you go once you’re on the surface of the Ocean on the other side. While there is a fair share of people who believe the last theory, no one believes it strongly enough to go and test it though, so we’re left with no answers.

Creepy Hands in moles’ lives

You’d think that a creature that lives so far away wouldn’t have much importance to people living on land, but you’d be wrong. Especially in settlements close to the Ocean, people are very well aware of the creepy hands then their dangers. Here, people often like to sail out on boats and ships for travel or fun, and as soon as you get a bit far away form the land there’s that persisting feeling of danger. Surely creepy hands live far out in the deep sea, but you never know when one of these creatures could drift a bit too close to land.

People in coastal districts also often like to tell this small riddle to each other:

-“What’s in the sea that makes it so big?”
-“The giant squid”

This refers to the fact that the reason why the Ocean is so big and deep is because it has to provide enough space for large creatures such as this giant squid. Now of course, the squid may be the usual answer that’s been accepted as the correct one, but this open ended question implies there are more options to choose from. In the Ocean as vast as the one surrounding our world there are sure to be more of the giant nightmare-inducing creatures, but more on that later.
