Ziscus flowers

Ziscus flowers, also known as flame blooms, are a small red-orange flower which blooms after the first hint of moisture appears in the air. This is a sign that the rains are approaching and the season of Phadrari is about to start. They grow on the lower slopes of the Rancour Bluff to the north of The Hollow Expanse.   They are a hardy plant, rooting easily in the rocks and spreading quickly on the wind. They are the first to regrow after any rockslide, or volcanic action. The flowers are considered a symbol of rebirth and luck due the fact they are difficult to get rid of once growing in a place.

Use

While not edible, the flowers are dried and combined. It is considered lucky to include them, or their likeness, in things. Young girls weave the blooms into their hair, and the distinctive shape of their petals are a common motif in fabric and art.   They are also added to the clay for crockery and other pottery items. But their main use every year, is to be incorporated into the adobe when making and repairing the buildings.

Incorporation in buildings

When the first blooms are spotted on the slopes of the mountains, a collection party is sent out from the City of Fenixia. Adult members of all five families take part, and while they are away, the children from the Halls of Childhood have an excursion to play at the River Beach.   The flowers are brought back to the city, where they are prepared by drying and weaving them into garlands. During the Renewal of the walls celebration, these garlands are pressed into the walls to bring their luck to the city itself and all those who inhabit it.
