Warforged

Warforged

It is unknown why the gnomes first created the warforged. Perhaps it was their innate sense of curiosity, or maybe, in their hubris, they thought they could rival the gods’ creations. All that is known is that the process does exist, and the crafting of true sentience from lifeless metal and powerful arcana has been repeated numerous times over the centuries. As more of these metallic walkers were created, a new race emerged into the world of Fehr’gia: a race built with singular purposes, most of which have been lost to the crushing passage of time. The warforged, being regarded as obsolete by their creators, have no purpose, and thus, they wander the lands seeking their motive to replace what was once a simple command.

Of Art and War

While one may at first mistake a warforged for a heroic knight clad in the finest of armors, upon closer inspection, it is clear the armor is in fact their skin. These automatons, bearing a resemblance to metal human beings, are more than just machines: they are thinking, feeling creatures. Through some strange technomancy, the gnomish technocracy has given the warforged their very own souls, granting them the ability to think and feel emotions. While all warforged are of the same general configuration — with two arms, two legs, and a head — each one has been specially customized for its original purpose, and as such, no two are exactly the same.

The warforged are one of the newest races to Fehr’gia, having been first constructed roughly 300 years ago. S.U.D., the research-obsessed gnome independent city state, has a stranglehold on the secrets of constructing warforged, and they keep the information more closely guarded than even the most reclusive of wizards or druids. In the short time since their creation, there has been intensive debate on the ability of warforged to gain citizenship. While initially they were treated as tools, many humanitarian groups seek to grant them the rights that come with being animate. Almost immediately, those who follow the Galanthian Tenets deemed warforged as no different than any other races; they see the humanity within all sentient creatures. Contrastly, most gnomes still perceive warforged as what they were originally intended to be: tools and nothing more. Currently, most warforged are trapped on the floating island of S.U.D; however, a spare few have been cast out onto the junkheap below. Fewer still have survived the fall and managed to escape into the wider world. On their own, free warforged seek out a purpose for themselves in Fehr’gia.

Your warforged was likely designed for a specific purpose, and whether they know this purpose or not is up to you. Part of a warforged discovering their own identity is choosing their own path, which likely defies and casts off the shackles of their original creation or creators.

The Fight for a Legacy

Overall, warforged are exceedingly rare in Fehr’gia, yet this rarity doesn’t create a bias in those around them: most warforged are generally accepted in Fehr’gia. In places such as Wayside Isle, for example, some warforged have begun to construct their own settlements, even if they are limited to the scrap and refuse from the floating island of S.U.D. above.

Culturally, many warforged have a unique interest in all that is contained within nature. While some warforged love flowers and growing plants, others instead are intrigued by the way living creatures operate, having little personal understanding of the need for food, water, or even air. Although the force of nature itself seeks to reject these unnatural souls, many warforged still attempt to investigate or incorporate elements of the wilds into their daily lives. Because warforged are inherently battling against a lack of an innate purpose, they are unabashingly unafraid to forge their own destiny and purpose, even when that destiny involves a divine being that dislikes them.

Warforged names

Because many warforged are still in the process of discovering themselves and their freedoms, warforged either repurpose their old identification numbers into new identities or come up with their own names to forge their personal identity. As such, there is no set naming convention, your warforged can take any name they deem fit.
