Snargle
Marrow Suckers
A Snargle is a seemingly harmless creature, weighing in at a total of fewer than 3 pounds and possessing a foot-long body without limbs. This appearance betrays their dastardly nature as ambush predators and parasites, able to dig themselves into almost any earthen surface or material and lie in wait until they sense tremors above. Upon awakening, their tails are able to coil back and launch them forward from the earth like a spring, with deadly accuracy aiming for the nearest creature it can collide with. Upon connecting, its maw opens wide, melting and chewing through even the most durable of armors and metals, grinding flesh until it reaches bone where it latches on, sucking every ounce of marrow it can from the poor victim. Dangerous by themselves, they flock together and entrap entire stretches of sands or valleys to form "snargle nests". Many governments will reward handsomely for the report of a snargle nest, knowing that it is wiser to crush an infestation before it spreads. Trolls, however, who are able to regenerate quickly, coexist peacefully with snargles... who still attempt and fail to consume the trolls in return.
