Theo was created by the Dougals specifically for the Holy Grail War however his magic circuits were found lacking, so Bradley Dougal instructed Painter 1 to look after his daughter Maria for him. The two grew close, with Maria even giving him the name Theo to make him sound more human. On March 30th, Maria & another hommunculus, Miner 8, started a riot within the Dougal's mine. This riot led to the collapse of the Dougal's mine & their stock being trashed. The only known surviving Hommunculus being Theo. Theo was then sent to Wuhan with one on Van Gogh's paintings in order to participate in the Holy Grail War, never to see Maria again.

Maria was the only daughter of Bradley Dougal, making her the heir of the Dougal family. Bradley trying to prep for the next Grail war had no time to spend raising her & so left the job up to his failed experiment, Painter 1, who Maria nicknamed Theo.
