Personal history
One day Cairo merchant, Chadsheh No'man, sets out for India. On the voyage there he decides to stop by an island. He finds a beautiful but disheveled woman there. She tells him that she is the Banu of Malekshah, the ruler of Rum. Rum was conquered by King Patras, a European invader, & Malekshah killed. The Banu was taken prisoner, but wound up on this island as she was being transported to Europe. No'man falls in love with her & abandons his journey to bring her back to Cairo with him. It turns out she is pregnant (with Malekshah's child), but when she gives birth, No'man eagerly passes off the child as his own. He names the boy Arsalan (Lion).
The child is immensely gifted, learning not only Arabic & Persian, but also seven European tongues. Bored with his studies by the age of thirteen, he also develops into a great hunter & warrior. At eighteen, Arsalan kills an aggressive lion with a sword. He then discovers the Khedive of Egypt hiding in a tree nearby, having been saved by Arsalan from certain death. The Khedive asks Arsalan to come to the palace tomorrow, saying that he will give him a job there. Arsalan & No'man goe to the palace the next day, but before the Khedive can give Arsalan a job at court, they receive word that a Ferangi delegation from King Patras, led by Almas Khan has arrived with a letter written in the Ferangi language. Arsalan is asked to read the letter, which reveals Arasalan's true identity, & demands that the boy, his mother, & No'man be delivered to him, or else soldiers will invade & lay waste to the city. The letter is also accompanied by a picture of Arsalan, so that identity could not be denied. Arsalan & Almas Khan speak in the Ferangi language, which no one else present is able to understand. Almas Khan angers Arsalan, & Arsalan cuts down Almas Khan with his sword, starting an altercation that wipes out the entire Ferangi delegation. The incident is a huge diplomatic incident, & Khedive asks No'man to take responsibility for it, since his son is the one who caused it. No'man states that if he gives his wealth to Khedive, & Khedive will give him an army, then No'man Arsalan will go to Rum & reclaim Arsalan's throne. Arsalan leaves the country, easily routing the Western forces there & assuming his father's throne. In Rum he comes across a painting of a beautiful princess, in whom he falls in love. The princess being Farokh Lagha, King Patras' daughter. Arsalan consults the Cup of Jamshid it warns of his adventures in the Occident but Arsalan ignores it & sneaks off to Patrasia, the capital of King Patras' empire. The gateways to the city are well guarded, & Arsalan encounters Tawus, who recognises him. Tawus & his brother Kawus take in the youth, Arsalan takes up the name Elias, & works in their coffeehouse. However he is suspected by two of the king's wazirs, the sun-minister Shams & the moon-minister Qamar. Both wazirs often come to visit the coffeehouse, insisting Arsalan should reveal his true identity, & warning him about the other. But Arsalan stays true. Eventually Princess Farokh Lagha is promised to King Papas' son, Prince Hushang. Desperate Arsalan manages also to catch the eye of the princess, & he finds his love reciprocated. He & Farokh lagh make a plan, killing Hushang, ruining the wedding night. Arsalan is suspected by police-commissioner Almas to be behind the murder. However with the help of Qamar, Arsalan evades & kills him. Arsalan then runs to find Farokh Lagha but she has been murdered.
Shams revives Farokh Lagha; but she is soon carried off by a hand from a cloud. Arsalan sets out to find her but encounters difficulties in a foreign city & is sentenced to hang. An afreet rescues him from the gallows & carries him to the land of the parīs. Again, everyone seems to know who he is (though he always tries to deny his identity & pretend he isn't anyone of consequence). He can almost never be sure who to trust, as he is repeatedly instructed not to believe what he will be told, & often to kill. He finds himself in wild realms where everyone has been turned to stone or in vast deserts, & he has many very strange encounters. He must retrieve Shamshir-e Zomorrodnegār (Emerald-Studded sword), said to have originally belonged to king Solomon, in order to kill Fulad-Zereh. Arsalan succeds but is injured & must make a special potion, using the monster's brain, to heal himself. After a four-year other-world odyssey he returns triumphant to Patrasia. Farokh Lagha's father forgives Arsalan & agrees to their marriage. They return to Rum, where Arsalan resumes his rule, & they live happily ever after.
