Pete Tyburn
Pete "Wrath of God" Tyburn was born in 1819 on the banks of the Mississippi River in the new American state of Illinois. His father was a Bible-thumping pastor and his mother a farner's daughter. As a young man Pete helped his father's revival events, eventually taking to the pulpit himself.
Where his father was professorial but forceful, young Pete was a charismatic, fire-and-brimstone crackerjack. While his theology was wobbly, he could have a congregation on their feet and singing praises in no time.
Pete's appeal was beginning to draw bigger crowds, and other preachers were not happy about their congregations shrinking. One night Pete and some friends were enjoying some drinks at a local tavern. A table of rowdy men nearby began shouting curses at Pete, apparently partisans of some unhappy local pastor. His friends shouted back and a fight broke out.
