Church of Radiance

Faith, Fire, and Control

The Sovereign Flame is the one true god, the creator of the world, and the source of all spiritual life. Just as the sun nourishes the material world, so too does the Sovereign Flame sustain the spirit, offering light to the faithful and consuming the unworthy in cleansing fire.

The rising and setting of the sun mirrors the eternal cycle of corruption and purification. Darkness breeds impurity, sheltering the forces of heresy, but at dawn, the Sovereign Flame scours the world anew.

Yet, the Flame watches always—it does not sleep, nor does it forgive. It is the all-seeing eye of judgment, its gaze falling upon every soul.

  • Every thought, action, and misstep is weighed.
  • Doubt is a disease—only unwavering faith leads to salvation.
  • Personal failings invite divine wrath, in this life and the next.

For the faithful, the afterlife is a realm of warmth and radiance, where souls rest in eternal communion with the Flame. But for the unredeemed, there is Neihm, a land of endless cold and darkness, where the Sovereign Flame is forever out of reach. There, the demons of Neihm strip away all remaining warmth, leaving the damned to freeze in torment for all eternity.

The Burning Saint: Aurenos Sanctos

Aurenos Sanctos, the Burning Saint, is the foundational martyr upon whom Aurelthar and the Radiant Creed are built. His suffering and sacrifice paved the way for the faith that now dominates the Dominion.

The Life and Trial of Aurenos Sanctos

Aurenos was a prophet of fire and vision, a man who walked among the people bearing the word of the Sovereign Flame. He preached that:

  • The world is impure, filled with doubt, corruption, and heresy.
  • Only through fire can the faithful be cleansed.
  • Obedience, sacrifice, and unwavering devotion are the will of the Sovereign Flame.

Aurenos gathered followers among the downtrodden and dispossessed, but his teachings threatened the rulers of his time, who saw his doctrine as a call for the destruction of old orders. Branded a heretic, he was captured, tortured, and condemned.

The Martyrdom: His Death by Fire

Before thousands of onlookers, Aurenos was burned alive, standing unshaken in the flames, preaching until the fire took his voice.

  • His final cry, whether a curse, a blessing, or a prophecy, became the First Tenet of the Radiant Creed.
  • Witnesses claim that his body turned to pure light, leaving no remains, and that the flames bowed before him.
  • His followers declared his death preordained, proving that faith must be tested through suffering.

Fire as Judgment: The Doctrine of Aurenos

After his death, his disciples codified his teachings, shaping the Radiant Creed into doctrine:

  • As Aurenos burned, so too must the heretics burn.
  • Suffering is proof of devotion—only through trial does faith become pure.
  • The world must be cleansed in his name, for fire alone grants salvation.

The Church’s Control Over His Image

Though Aurenos is worshiped without question, the details of his message have long been reshaped by the High Inquisitors.

  • Some whisper that his final words were not a call to war, but a plea for understanding, long buried by the Church.
  • Others believe that his teachings have been twisted, used as a banner for conquest rather than the path to salvation he intended.

Regardless of the truth, Aurenos Sanctos remains the greatest symbol of faith, sacrifice, and absolute obedience. His name is spoken in war prayers, at executions, and in the last breaths of those who perish in the fires of the Dominion.

The Machinery of Faith: Psychological Control

In Aurelthar, faith is not a choice—it is a totalizing system of control, enforced through indoctrination, ritual, and fear. The Clerical Hierarchy ensures that doubt is impossible and that loyalty is absolute.

Fear and Punishment: The Foundation of Obedience

At the core of the Radiant Creed is the belief that every misstep invites divine wrath. From birth, citizens are taught that failure, weakness, or hesitation will lead to damnation.

  • Public punishments—trials, burnings, and ritualized atonements—serve as constant reminders of the consequences of impurity.
  • Perpetual anxiety is weaponized, ensuring that people police themselves out of fear of eternal suffering.
  • The spectacle of punishment is as important as the act itself, reinforcing the certainty of divine justice.

Rituals and Cognitive Conditioning

Daily rituals and ceremonies are not just acts of devotion—they are structured psychological reinforcements.

  • Repetition solidifies belief—morning prayers, confessions, and communal penance reinforce the absolute nature of the faith.
  • Cognitive dissonance is exploited—those who feel doubt must publicly confess and atone, further internalizing their submission.
  • Symbols of the faith dominate architecture, language, and daily life, creating a world where belief is omnipresent and inescapable.

Social Control: The Righteous and the Damned

Aurelthar divides its people into two groups:

  1. The Righteous – Those who are loyal, unquestioning, and devoted.
  2. The Damned – Those who harbor doubt, resist authority, or question the faith.
  • Ostracism is weaponized—to be seen as impure is to risk isolation, poverty, and suspicion.
  • Honor is granted to those who display extreme devotion, encouraging public displays of faith to secure social standing.
  • Architecture and public spaces reinforce submission, from towering cathedrals of the Flame to narrow, oppressive streets where the faithful are reminded of their smallness before divine power.

Control of Knowledge: The Forbidden Beyond the Flame

The Clerical Hierarchy ensures that no alternative views exist.

  • Education, literature, and art are all controlled—only that which aligns with the Creed is permitted.
  • Foreign knowledge is branded heretical, preventing outside influences from weakening the faithful.
  • The faithful live in an echo chamber, their beliefs constantly validated, ensuring that dissenting thoughts die before they take root.

The High Inquisitor: The Divine Will Made Flesh

The High Inquisitor is infallible, his word the voice of the Sovereign Flame. Obedience to him is obedience to the divine, and to question his decrees is to question the Flame itself.

  • Modern psychology tells us that individuals are more likely to obey authority when it is perceived as absolute—in Aurelthar, there is no higher authority than the High Inquisitor.
  • His presence alone is a force of control, ensuring that doubt cannot exist.

Aurelthar: Faith, Fire, and Fear

The Church of Radiance is not just a religion—it is the foundation of absolute control. It is a system where fear is law, where ritual is reinforcement, and where fire is both judgment and salvation.

To live in Aurelthar is to breathe doctrine, to fear impurity, and to know that every moment is a test of faith. For those who falter, there is only fire.
