The Restless Dunes

The Restless Dunes is a vast sand sea covering the majority of Uharhia, the southeastern subcontinent of Asada. Shifting dunes make up much of this area, interspersed with stony mesas, canyons, and the rare oasis.

Geography

The Restless Dunes is one of the largest deserts in the world, with its center containing one of the largest continuous bodies of sand in the world, accented by sporadic outcrops of rock. The expanse of the desert extends over 900,000 square miles. The sand overlies gravel or gypsum plains and the dunes reach maximum heights of up to 250 m (820 ft). The sands are predominantly silicates, composed of 80 to 90% of quartz and the remainder feldspar, whose iron oxide-coated grains color the sands in orange, purple, and red.

Ecosystem

Gazelles, oryx, sand cats, and spiny-tailed lizards are just some of the desert-adapted species that survive in the extreme environment of the Restless Dunes, which features everything from red dunes to deadly quicksand. The climate is mostly dry (the major part receives around 100 mm (3.9 in) of rain per year but some very rare places receive as little as 50 mm), and temperatures oscillate between very high heat and seasonal night time freezes. It is part of the deserts and xeric shrublands biome and the Palearctic realm.

Fauna & Flora

The Arabian Desert has 102 native species of mammals. Native mammals include the Asadan oryx, sand gazelle, mountain gazelle, Asadan ibex, Asadan wolf, caracal (Caracal caracal), sand cat, red fox, and desert hare. The Asiatic cheetah[7] and lion[8] used to be here.   The ecoregion is home to 310 bird species.

History

During the time of the Miropan Empire, the vast wastes of the Restless Dunes served not only as a natural defensive border but were also employed as a burial ground for many of the pharaonic kings and high nobles through the centuries. There are multiple tombs and cities of the dead that were constructed and subsequently left to be lost to the sands as an ultimate defense against robbery.
