The Dragonborn Emirate

Structure

Historically, the Emirate functions as an elected Monarchy. The Emir is elected from among the rulers (called princes) of cities within its borders. The Emir rules for life once chosen. After joining the Imperium, the elected Emirs also had to be approved by the Brovian Emperor. In practice, the elections have degraded into favoring the spouse/child of the previous Emir except in certain circumstances where a change in leadership is thought to be required.
Below the Emir is a chamber of advisors and ministers which handle most of the day-to-day tasks of governing. The number of both can vary depending on the reigning Emir's style of rule. In the past some have favored minimal government while others have utilized an extensive bureaucracy. Regardless, three positions are considered essential and always maintained: the Minister of Revenue and Finance, the Advisor of Foreign Affairs, and the Minister of Tactics and Defense.
Below the Emir are the princes, the leading members of each area's most prominent clan, who rule their cities and surrounding areas directly. However, in more extraordinary situations, the princes will meet in council with the Emir to debate any issue that will affect the Emirate as a whole.
The western and central princes of the country tend to be the most wealthy and powerful. The western Jade Coast is the most fertile region and the neighboring mountains contain valuable ores in high quantities. The princes of central clans, meanwhile, protect lucrative trade caravans traversing the desert covering most of their territory in exchange for shares in the profit of each venture. The eastern princes' domains lack the excess of resources of the their fellows, but as a result tend to be more pragmatic in their approaches to any problem.

Demography and Population

With a population of 29.3 million people, the Dragonborn Emirate may not have the largest population but it arguably has the most diversity, seeming to serve as a crossroads of the world.
