The Battery
The battery is a small town built around the ruins of Fort Clinton, a circular fortification covering the area of about 5 acres and surrounded by a wide, seven meters high wall.
The battery used to be a gun emplacement fortress protecting the entrance to the Hudson River and the corridor of the East River. In the days before the war the council of Manhattan decided to keep and renovate the renaissance fortification and convert it to a park.
Due to the fact that the surrounding area was covered by the park, and not any highrise buildings, the fortification remained intact and created a perfect place to people to initially find selter within its walls and its undeground converted-to-a-bunker old armamment warehouse. Nowdays the 5 acres protected by the thick and tall wall gave birth to probably the most well defended settlement in Manhattan Island
The Battery numbers about 1200 permanent settlers but due to its location in most cases there are about fifteen (1500) to seventeen hundred people within its inner walls. The town is surrounded by fields growing mostly carrots and some tatos, but the area is very commonly attacked by creatures from the crater, leading to most food to be coming into the settlement from outside.
Growing into a city
The current mayor of the Battery, Jonas Fullham, is making a concerted effort to bring the Battery at a place that can flourish as a settlement. He is currently using most of the settlement's resources to excavate deeper into the ground and create more living and food growing space for the town.
The current project being overtaken is the instalation of a fission reactor that will allow the Battery to grow food underground by using hydroponics and desalinate and clean water. Because of this Jonas is looking for brave souls to venture deep into the wasteland and bring back equipment that his head engineer, Tatiana Soup is looking for to make this happen.
