758: Nobles

The Peerage of the realm usually has specific ranks or titles. That ones provided here are representative of the culture levels use for this background generator. Use a title that in your world would most closely correspond to the selected rank of Nobility for your world or campaign.   Instructions: Roll a d100 to determine the title possessed by the NPC noble and match the result against the column corresponding to the NPC's Culture on Table 758A: Noble Notes. The bold face entries below explain the heading on the table. if the culture level has not been determined use Table 758B to figure out the culture leven for the noble. If the gender has not been determined roll high or low . High = female, Low = male   For player characters. The next step is to return to the table 103 social status and reroll the characters social status anding both the character TiMod (titlemod) and CuMod to the roll. Remember Nobles automatically add 5 to their Solmods   Titles: The title for nobles are given in the terms of western and European peerage and long with a hand full of tribal leadership titles. They are listed in the sidebar However use a title name that fit your campaign/culture that best fits your setting.   TiMod: Each title has associated title modifier (TiMod). A number that is added to the character die roll and Cumod rolls when Social status is rerolled on Table 103.   Special Titles.: Nobles may gain special titles attached to their names, honorifics that have been bestowed upon them by their liege lords or gained by conquering new territories. If a type of die is show in this column, Role it to obtain the number of special titles that the noble character possesses. The percentage is shown, this is the chance the character will have a single special title. select any special titles on table 871: Special titles for the Nobility.   Land Holdings: Nobles are Land-owners. The percentage shown in this column is the chance that a noble will possess personal lands and estates. A result of 98-00 always indicates that the noble's lands have been taken aways and that the noble and his family are exiled. In disfavor with the rulers of their land.   Land Size: Roll the indicated dice. This is the number of square miles of land possessed by the noble or at least deeded to him by his liege lord.   Game Play Benefits: Unless it has already been determined that a character parents have died. A player character of Noble Social Status will began as a the child of NPC noble and will have no actual title himself "other then Prince or Princess". Due to their assumed importance to the scheme of things characters of Noble birth can use there proficiency bonus charisma based check with dealing with local or political matters. A Noble typically has a guard or servant with them so at the GM's discretion a noble player may be able to loyal retainers to follow him. A civilized noble will have 1D4 hobbies in place of an Occupation. See table 427: Hobbies   GM Notes: Players characters nobles who insist on being a public figure should find themselves subjected to unwanted attention much the same as celebrity or popular political figure might encounter in our society.    

Common Titles


  • Emperor(Empress):  Rules over other kings and Princes.
  • High King:  Rules over lesser kings often an elected position.  Common in barbarian/clan Cultures
  • King (Queen)  A ruler who is the supreme authority in his land.  A king normally owes fealty to no other. 
  • Kahn:  Powerful Nomad . "Rules a great tribe or tribal federation."
  • Archuke (ArchDuchess): Royal duke, possibly next in line for the throne, always a sibling of a king.
  • Prince or Princess Royal:  Child of the king or a emperor. A crown prince will assumed the throne.
  • Duke (Duchess):  Rule over one or more providences
  • Marquis (Marquese): Ruled over a one or more territorial county
  • Chieftain.  Tribe leader usually lead the single tribe or clan.
  • Viscount (Viscountess): A  hereditary noble created under a Duke to assist in ruling.  Typically did the job of bailiffs
  • Jarl or Eorl:  A barbarian equivalent of marquis, count or baron.  Maybe Hereditary but is often appointed or won.
  • Sub Chieftain: A tribe chieftain's lieutenant
  • Count or Earl: (Countess) Rules over Barons
  • Baron (Baroness) Rules over a barony, smallest size fiefdom.
  • Baronet (baroness): Below a baron but noble title often given to commoners non hereditary.
  • Prince (Princesses)  Child of Noble. Also may be the rule of a principality in which case he is equal to a king.
  • Knight ("sir" or "Lady")  An earned title which cannot be inherited.  Usually granted by a king.
  • Hetman (Hetwoman)  A village Leader.
