The Phasal Tree

The Phasal Tree is an island-sized tree that floats in the sky, supporting the city of Fairtree and tethered by a highway-wide vine rooted in the Earth. Knotholes on the tree's trunk allow special vehicles access to the interior of the Tree and Interdimensional Travel.   The Phasal Tree is a powerful beacon in the starless void; it is easy for navigators to detect and steer toward. This is intentional, and it is very dangerous for the host world, which is why it spent millennia anchored in the but still under Ffairian control).

History

Astiko, as it is called by those who travel within, was brought to Earth by the Far Fairlians to be used as a base during The War 80 years ago. In exchange for allowing this, Earth was granted sovereignity over the city held within the Tree's branches once the War concluded. Technically this is still true, but as the Far Fairlians still claim control over the interior of the Tree, and the inhabitants of Fairtree (known simply as Fairlians) have strong opinions on their independence (and the power to back those opinions up), the Tree and its city have become a power in its own right.   While not technically a secret, it is not generally known the Far Fairlians themselves inherited the Phasal Tree from another species, who may also have inherited it. Its true age is unknown, and it has supported at least four previous cities over as many millennia.

Significance

The Phasal Tree is a primary means of Interdimensional Travel, and Earth's only access point to the Rift. It also supports the city of Fairtree. Its pollen can trigger the development of magical gifts, and its arrival triggered the awakening of Crux Magic. The Modern Era dates from its arrival.
